(1803 Offenbach am Main - 1852 Paris) Gefährliche Überfahrt Szenische Darstellung mit zwei Frauen auf dem Deck eines Schiffes in rauer See, im Hintergrund am Horizont ein goldgelber Streif der unter- oder aufgehenden Sonne. Seltenes Gemälde des bedeutenden französischen Künstlers, der vor allem als gefragter Kupferstecher und Illustrator tätig war und als Maler nur ein kleines Oeuvre schuf. 1831 stellte er erstmals romantische Genre- und Historienbilder im Pariser Salon aus, die offenbar die Aufmerksamkeit des Herzog von Orléans erregten, der ihn 1834 mit einem Gemälde mit der Darstellung des Todes von Bertrand du Guesclin beauftragte. Auch für den König malte er u. a. große Schlachtenbilder. Öl/Lwd. L. u. sign.; 50 cm x 61 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas. Signed.

Antoine, dit Tony JOHANNOT 1803 - 1852 Projet de costume pour Othello dans "Le More de Venise" Aquarelle gouachée sur trait de crayon 18 x 12,50 cm On y joint un projet pour le costume du Doge dans "Le More de Venise" par Alfred Johannot à la mine de plomb rehaussée d'aquarelle et de gouache, signé et daté de 1829 (21,5 x 17,5 cm) Le 24 octobre 1829 fut donné sur la scène de la Comédie-Française la pièce de Shakespeare Le More de Venise traduite en alexandrins et adaptée par Alfred de Vigny à la demande du baron Taylor. Un très grand soin fut accordé à la mise en scène de cette représentation. Les décors furent conçus par Pierre-Luc-Charles Cicéri et les costumes par les frères Johannot et réalisés à grands frais par Guiot. Les deux rôles principaux, Desdemona et Othello, furent confiés à Mlle Mars et Joanny. Le Doge de Venise fut quant à lui interprété par Saint-Aulaire. The second volume is the oft-lacking Appendix to the work. Published in 1858. Both are 10½x7½, half brown morocco and cloth, gilt-lettered spines, all edges gilt. Paris: L. Curmer, 1856 [and] 1858 A beautifully illustrated work. Rubbing and light nicks to spines and edges; a tiny tear at bottom gutter edge of first few leaves of 1856 volume; else contents near fine.
