DESCRIPTION: Snell Johnson (American, 1929-2001). Bronze sculpture. Horse World. Marked on base "Snell Johnson 1988; 3/50 Horse World". On wood pedestal stand. Snell Johnson, the sculptor of the MGM lion, created the original, life-sized "Horse World" sculpture for th entrance of Westworld in Scottsdale, AZ. The sculpture depicts a group of three horses which represent an Arabian, Thoroughbred, and a Quarter Horse. The horses are depicted each exhibiting a different behavior: the Quarter Horse is cutting, the Thoroughbred is racing, and the Arabian is showing. This sculpture is now considered a Scottsdale landmark. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Robert Russoli, one of the investors in Johnson's original life-size sculpture. MEASUREMENTS: Sculpture Approximately 37" long x 22" wide x 29" high. Overall with stand 63" high. CONDITION: Very good.

Johnson's more than 500 bronze works -- 350 of which are life-size statues -- include horses, American Indians and other human figures. His works have been purchased byformer President Ronald Reagan, late cowboy film legend Roy Rogers and former world heavyweight boxing champions George Foreman and Mike Tyson. The MGM's "Grand Lion," created in 1997, is 45 feet tall, 50 feetwide and weighs 50 tons. It is said to be the largest bronze sculpture monument in the Western Hemisphere. Johnson's other works include a bronze statue at the Stratosphere Tower and a massive horse and chariot atCaesars Gauteng, South Africa. Johnson, a self-taught artist who is considered one of the most prolific sculptors of his time, had to overcome considerableadversity to attain his fame. Sculpture is in good condition.
