Alfred Cheney Johnston Estate and Ephemera Group

          Est: $500 - $750

Group of 10 items from famed photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston's estate. Two copies of Johnston's spiral bound compilation "Enchanting Beauty" (1937, Swan Publications, Inc.) in their original cardboard housings. The first copy is in fine condition, with its cardboard box exhibiting some staining and tearing at its corners. The second copy is in only fair condition, exhibiting toning, foxing and staining on the book itself and its cardboard box (which is deteriorating structurally as well). One copy of the spiralbound compilation "US Camera 1935" (William Morrow & Company) featuring two works by Johnston. In poor condition. The front cover is separating from the binding and foxing and toning is evident throughout. Most notably there appears to be some water damage to the back portion of the publication which results in quite a few pages being stuck together. This is isolated to the advertising section that follows the photographic reproductions however. Largest shipping item measuring approximately 9 3/4" wide, 11 3/4" high and 1 1/4" deep. One copy of "The Camera: The Photographic Journal of America" June 1935 issue, with Johnston's work gracing the cover and throughout the magazine itself. In poor condition. The cover wrap has separated from the original binding and the interior has been stapled at some point to keep the structure intact. One "Calendar of Events in the Library of Congress, January 1973" mailer detailing an exhibition of Johnston's work. In fine condition. One memorial card and one greeting card from Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home in remembrance of Johnston's passing in 1971. The greeting card contains a film transparency of the bouquet of flowers the recipient sent to the service. The tape holding the transparency in place is missing so it is now loose within the folds of the card. Two canes, one measuring 33 3/4" high with an irregular octagonal 17k gold (XRF tested to confirm) handle stamped on four sides with floral decorations. There are dents throughout the handle (a sizable one at the very top) and a single fissure where the cap is mounted to the shaft. The other cane, measuring 35 1/2" high is more oval shaped than round and tapers down to its ferrule. The bone handle is imprinted with the initials ACJ in a distinctive manner. Both canes exhibit dings and scuffs in their wooden shafts but are in overall fine condition. One gold plated silver money clip monogrammed with the initials ACJ (in the same style as above) and one gold plated brass tie pin with a simple geometric design. A riveted metal tin wastebasket from Johnston's studio measuring approximately 11" square and 15 1/2" high. Keywords: publishing, correspondence, periodical, fashion, accessories, walking stick, art deco, photography, artist

          Est: $500 - $1,000

Three framed photographic prints each signed in pencil on their respective mat boards by Alfred Cheney Johnston. One photographic print depicting a New England country road in fall. Image measures approximately 9" wide and12 1/2" high by sight. Wooden frame measures 16 1/2" wide and 20 1/2" high. One portrait of an unidentified model/actress. Image measures approximately 10 1/4" wide and 13 1/4" high by sight. Wooden frame measures approximately 14 3/4" wide and 22 3/4" high. Image not matted but applied directly to matboard and shows evidence of loosening from its mount. One photographic print of "Summer", depicting a woman being led by two dogs through a meadow. This work was featured on the cover of the June 1935 issue of "The Camera" magazine. The image measures 13" wide and 16" high by sight. Wooden frame measures approximately 21" wide and 26" high. The print itself is somewhat faded from being exposed to direct sunlight. Not inspected out of frames. The matting on all three works exhibits various degrees of foxing, toning and staining. Wooden frames all exhibit chipping and slight separation at moulding junctions. The back paper wrapping on the frames is rapidly deteriorating. Keywords: art deco, still life, portraiture, photography, artist

Alfred Cheney Johnston, Portfolio with photographs of Norma Shearer and an unidentified man.

          Est: $400 - $1,000

Alfred Cheney Johnston, Portfolio with photographs of Norma Shearer and an unidentified man. Johnston (1885 – 1971) revolutionized entertainment photography with his portraits of Ziegfield Follies dancers, often nude. He also photographed film stars. This is a very rare large portfolio, 22 x 14 inches, with decorative identification on the cover. It contains a profile of an actress, probably Norma Shearer, and an unidentified man, both 13 x 10 inch gelatin silver prints, ca. 1920, with Johnston’s signature on the mounts. Shearer (1902 – 1943) was a major silent film star. A very similar profile of her by Johnston sold at a Phillips auction in 2007 for $2640. The second scan is of that photograph. The scan of the portfolio cover only shows the part with the lettering. The whole textured paper portfolio is larger. Both photograph have silvering, but no damage. Here is a link to a PDF that makes it easy to browse the offerings.
