Joe Jones was an American landscape painter, muralist, and lithographer born in St. Louis, MO, in 1909. His work is found in collections in major art institutions including the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Detroit Institute of Arts. Jones passed away in 1963.

Biography

Joe Jones (b. 1909 - d. 1963) was an artist associated with the John Reed Club and who was followed closely by Time magazine during his career. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he taught himself art and began to work as a house painter at the age of 15.

He remained in Missouri until he was 27, winning several prizes at the St. Louis Art Guild exhibitions. This led to the creation of a mural for the KMOX radio station and his first solo exhibition (by his guild) shortly thereafter.

In 1933, he was financed by the “Joe Jones Club” and moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts. He painted a series of murals at the Commonwealth College in Mena, Arkansas, and the New Deal mural in Charleston, Missouri. The first story about Jones ran in Time magazine in 1935, and he served in the War Art Unit during World War II.

He died on April 9, 1963, in Morristown, New Jersey, at 54 years old.
