Title page printed in black and red. Full late nineteenth century calf stamped decoratively, ruled in gilt, six-paneled spine stamped in gilt and blind with a red morocco spine label. Coats of arms of the King's School, Grantham, Lincolnshire on covers. All edges gilt, gilt turn-ins. Prize bindings. FIRST MILMAN/JONES EDITION. "Owen Jones had yet a fourth book out in 1849, The Works of Horace, with a Life by Canon H.H. Milman. It is a continuation of the Ancient Spanish Ballads and Book of Common Prayer style: the pages of the Life are surrounded by decorated borders cut on wood and printed in colours, and the Books of the Poems are prefaced by eight chromolithographed title-pages in a roman or classical style, of which the colour schemes are unusual and attractive. Views on the Nile: from Cairo to the Second Cataract, first edition, additional tinted lithograph title and 39 plates on 31 sheets, printed title in red, blue and black, advertisement leaf at end, foxing and some water-staining, mostly marginal, some tears and repairs, likewise mostly marginal but occasionally into image, contemporary morocco-backed cloth, lettered in gilt on upper cover, rebacked preserving original spine, [Blackmer 888; Bobins 1442], folio, Graves and Warmsley, 1843. ⁂ Owen Jones visited parts of Greece, Alexandria, Cairo, Thebes, and Constantinople in 1833. Sixteen plates are after sketches by Jones and fifteen by the architect Jules Goury, who later died of cholera while collaborating with Jones on his study of the Alhambra at Granada.

Owen Jones's Grand Tour, which included Constantinople and Cairo, sparked his fascination with Islamic buildings. In 1834 he and the young French architect Jules Goury visited Granada and the Alhambra. After Goury's sudden death, Jones visited the Alhambra again in 1837. The printing of the sketches of these two trips and the need of the flat, opaque, and accurate color schemes to reproduce the decorative motifs led Jones to set up his own chromolithographic press in the Adelphi with the help of Day & Haghe. Abbey Travel, 156. Two volumes, folio (575 x 415mm). Chromolithographic titles and 102 lithographic plates, of which 70 are chromolithographs and a number heightened in gold (minor soiling and chipping to extremities of preliminary pages; some plates with minor repairs or wear to margins).
