    WILLIAM E. "GRUMBLE" JONES

    WILLIAM E. "GRUMBLE" JONES (1824 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who fought with Stuart at Gettysburg, with Longstreert In Tennessee; killed at Piedmont. A great original piece, a hand-drawn and colored, signed drawing of a lock along the Erie Canal in New York, 31 1/2" x 22", overall, done by Jones as part of the curricula required of him while a cadet at West Point. The ca. 1842 drawing, signed "W. E. Jones" at top, shows a side elevation, top view and various sections of the lock, with measurements representated by letters which would have been further defined elsewhere. It is additionally signed by professors DENNIS H. MAHAN (1802–1871), noted American military theorist and civil engineer, and Major EDWARD B. HUNT (1822-1863), who later constructed fortifications and was killed in the explosion of a prototype of his "Submarine battery". The plan bears heavy folds and some chips at margins, a few spots, but remains very good overall.

    WILLIAM E. "GRUMBLE" JONES (1824 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who fought with Stuart at Gettysburg, with Longstreet In Tennessee; killed at Piedmont. Scarce A.D.S. "W. E. Jones", 1p. 4to., "Jefferson Barracks, Mo.", Sep. 20, 1851, a rather surprising "Circular" sent to the officers of the Mounted Rifles which asks the approval of recipients to the redirection of funds from the "billiards table fund" to a better recipient: "...a monument at West Point to Capt. James Stuart of their Regiment...". Fine condition. Stuart had been killed with part of his command in Oregon by hostile Indians. We could find no monument to him listed at West Point.
