An extensive landscape with a monastery above a river signed and dated 'C D Jongh 1632' (lower right) oil on panel 123/4 x 20 in. (32.4 x 50.8 cm.) PROVENANCE R.S. Calendar, 1946 (according to a label on the reverse). NOTES The present picture can be related to a Landscape with a Bridge, also signed and dated 1632, which was with Dr. C. Benedict, Paris, 1951 (J. Hayes, 'Claude de Jong', Burlington Magazine, XCVIII, January 1956, pp.3-11, fig. 12). Although de Jongh was painting in Utrecht or Haarlem in the early 1630's, he is known to have referred to his drawings executed in England on various successive visits between 1615 and 1628. While his topographical views of London are well documented, he also returned to Saint Augustine's Monastery, Canterbury on subsequent visits ( op. cit. fig. 8) and there are three drawings of other picturesque monastic ruins in the British Museum. It is therefore possible that the present picture is an English view.

A river Landscape with Figures in a rowing Boat and Travellers crossing a Bridge, a fortified Town on a Hill beyond signed and dated 'CD Jongh/1632' oil on panel 12 x 20in. (32.4 x 50.8cm.) PROVENANCE R.S. Callender, London, 1946 (according to an old label on the reverse). NOTES Claude de Jongh is first mentioned in documents in 1627 as a member of the painter's guild in Utrecht. Although there is no evidence to suggest that De Jongh travelled to Italy, his paintings took on an Italianate flavor from the mid-1630s. While retaining the wedge-shaped compositions and monochromatic coloring prevelant in the work of the local artists of the Haarlem school, and seen in De Jongh's signed and dated work of 1633 in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (Inv. no. 1308a), the rounded overlapping forms and light flecked foliage of the present work are derived more from the paintings of Adam Elsheimer.

VIEW OF THE TIBER, ROME, WITH THE ISOLA TIBERINA AT LEFT AND THE PONTE FABRICIO signed lower left and dated 1634 oil on panel 10 by 135/8 in. 25.4 by 34.6 cm. Claude de Jongh is first mentioned in documents in 1627 as a member of the painters ' guild in Utrecht. He travelled in England, and his rare topographical drawings and paintings are much sought after, especially those depicting London Bridge. One of these, A View of Old London Bridge, signed and dated 1630, is in the collection of the Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood. The present painting, first identified by Giulio Briganti, according to the Museum, is de Jongh 's sole known specific topographical view of an Italian scene. It depicts the Ponte Fabricio, Rome (in modern times also called the Ponte dei Quattro Capi, taking its name from the four-headed marble hermae on the balustrades that were added in 1849). The bridge, built in 62 B.C. by L. Fabricius, is the oldest bridge in Rome and crosses over from the left bank of the Tiber, near the Ghetto quarter and Theater of Marcellus, to the Tiber Island. According to John Hayes (see literature below), in the middle 1630 's, de Jongh 's landscapes began to reflect a certain Italianate flavor. It is not recorded when de Jongh may have travelled in Italy; Hayes suggests the present work may be based on a drawing. He illustrates another painting (see literature below, fig. 13, p. 11), a Classical Landscape, which had been considered to be a companion to the present picture. Provenance: Rt. Hon. Lord Leigh Edward Speelman, London, 1950 (together with a companion [see note above]) Acquired by the present owner in 1959 (Acc. no. 59.65) Exhibition: Atlanta, Georgia, Atlanta Art Association, Landscape into Art, 1962, cat. no. 14 Literature: John Hayes, "Claude de Jongh," The Burlington Magazine, Vol. XCVIII, January, 1956, p. 8 Peter C.
