Growing up in Dresden, he completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer there and at the same time attended the Dresden School of Applied Arts under Max Frey. 1896 - 1898 he studied painting at the Dresden Art Academy with Leon Pohle; From 1898 to 1904 he continued his studies at the Munich Art Academy under Heinrich von Zügel. Junghanns worked as an illustrator for the Munich “Youth”. 1904 - 1944 Junghanns worked as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy - as head of the master class for animal and plein air painting. From March 1933 to September 1933 he was acting head of the art academy. In 1910 and 1938 he was represented at the Viennale in Venice.
