Béla Kádár Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1877 - d. 1956

(b Budapest, Hungary, 1877; d Budapest, Hungary 1956) Hungarian Painter. Béla Kádár began his study in 1896, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and won the Kohner prize in 1910. His early works, exhibited in 1918, showed a strong influence of Secessionists and Post-impressionists. In 1923, he was invited to show his painting in a group exhibition in Berlin at the invitation of Herwath Walden, an important figure in the German avant-garde. The exhibition brought much needed attention to European avant-garde artists when it traveled to New York. With the help from Walden, Kádár’s major exhibition was planned for the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1928. Kádár distinguished himself as a modern painter; his paintings often combined themes from Hungarian folklore and peasant life with the artistic styles of early 20th century, including expressionism, constructivism and cubo-futurism.

            Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Béla Kádár, Hungarian 1877–1956 - Hungarian village; watercolour on paper, signed lower right 'Kadar Bela', 59.7 x 41.7 cm (ARR) Provenance: private collection, purchased in October 1976 and thence by descent Note: This vibrant work demonstrates Hungarian artist Béla Kádár’s unique style, combining a cubist approach to form with an expressionist sense of energy. The present work has a highly complex composition, reflecting the power and noise of the crowded village scene. Heavily influenced by Hungarian folklore, Kádár became a distinctive voice in Modernist art, exhibiting at the celebrated Der Strum Gallery in Berlin in the 1920s, alongside Oscar Kokoschka, Paul Klee and fellow Jewish artist Marc Chagall. He would also be included as part of a pioneering show at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, in 1928, selected by Man Ray and Duchamp.
