CARL KAHLER (1855-1906) Portrait of Baroness Marie Alexandrine (Mary) von Vetsera 1889 pastel on paper signed, inscribed and dated lower left: Carl Kahler / Melbourne 89 93.5 x 64cm; frame size: 114 x 85.5cm PROVENANCE: Leonard Joel, 8th August 2000, Lot 247 Private Collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: Baroness Maria Vetsera (19 March 1871 - 30 January 1889) was an Austrian noblewoman and 17-year-old mistress of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria. Rudolf, who was married to Princess Stéphanie of Belgium, was the only son of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, and heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. Vetsera is known for being part of the tragic royal murder-suicide proposed by Rudolf at an Imperial hunting lodge in Mayerling on 30th January 1889, known as the Mayerling incident. Vetsera seemingly perceived the plans as a union in death of star-crossed lovers, writing: "If I could give him my life, I should be glad to do it, for what does life mean for me?" The Austrian National Library obtained copies of Vetsera's farewell letters to her family in 2015 which had been found in a bank safe deposit box where they had been placed in 1926. Rudolf's death left Franz Joseph without a direct male heir and after the death of Franz-Joseph's younger brother, Archduke Karl Ludwig in 1896 from typhoid, the next heir was his eldest son, Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was assassinated in 1914; an event that precipitated World War I. The aftermath of the Mayerling incident left much controversy and mystery, taking years of research and forensic examination to uncover the truth of what happened at Mayerling to Maria Vetsera and Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria.

CARL KAHLER (AUSTRIAN 1855-1906) Study for My Wife`s Lovers, circa 1891 oil on canvas 64.2 x 51.7 cm (25 1/4 x 20 3/8 in.) signed lower right LOT NOTES In 1891, the American millionaire and cat enthusiast Kate Birdsall Johnson approached Carl Kahler with a commission to paint a group portrait of her feline companions, jokingly nicknamed My Wife`s Lovers by her husband. Having established himself as a portraitist and a painter of horses, this seemed like a natural connection for Kahler, but as he lacked experience painting cats the artist spent much of the next three years creating studies of the animals he would eventually feature in the monumental painting (which recently sold at Sotheby`s for $826,000 and is now on display at the Portland Art Museum. The completed painting, featuring forty-two of Johnson`s beloved felines caused a sensation at the 1893 Chicago World`s Fair and was eventually acquired by Ernest Haquette, who kept the painting on display at the San Francisco Palace of Art Salon. In 1906, the Salon as well as more than 3,000 people, including the artist, perished in the devastating earthquake, while My Wife`s Lovers, and this study, survived. In the study offered here, the meowing kitten depicted in this composition can be seen just off-center, to the left of Johnson`s centrally poised prized cat Sultan, and directing his attention to the white reclining Angora cat (whose head is depicted in a slightly different position in the present lot), named His Highness.

          Est: €3,000 - €6,000

Oil on canvas USA/Germany, late 19th century Carl Kahler (1855-1906) – Austrian animal and genre painter Signed ‘Carl Kahler’ lower left Dimensions: 76.5 x 63.8 cm In a gold-brown painted wooden frame with floral ornamental stucco work, dimensions: 94.5 x 81.5 cm Very good condition Carl Kahler is possibly the most famous cat portraitist, his monumental painting (177.8 x 258.4 cm) of 42 cats recently sold for a record price of €750.000 Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 6,000 Euro The Austrian genre and animal painter Carl Kahler portrayed 42 cats of the millionaires Kate Birdsall Johnson in San Francisco in 1891. At the time, she was the owner of the world’s possibly most expensive cat named ‘Sultan’ worth 3.000 US dollar, who appears centrally in Kahler’s painting. Whether the similarity to the cat in our painting is accidental remains the decision of the observer. Kahler had never painted a single cat until he received the commission for this colossal painting. Within a period of three years he made several studies of every cat. Condition: The painting is next to slight framing marks, a running varnish spot to the left of the cat and two mends on the reverse in very good condition. The frame has partial chips and is over painted in some areas. The stretcher measures 76.5 x 63.8 cm and the dimensions of the frame are 94.5 x 81.5 cm.
