      Dec. 04, 2024

      ALOIS KALVODA 1875 - 1934 - BIRCHES IN FALL

      Est: -

Alois Kalvoda had a natural feeling for the colour of the landscape and was one of the most sought-after pupils of the Mařák Landscape Specialty. A sketch of autumn birches in soft cool light reveals both his slight melancholy and his effort to conceive even relatively simple landscapes in a very decorative way with looser contours. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: watercolour, cardboard, Signed: sign. lower right: Al-Kalvoda

      ALOIS KALVODA (Czech / Bohemian 1875 - 1934) - Landscape view

      Est: -

technique: oil on canvas | 45 x 55 cm | signature: bottom left | framed under glass Lot description Alois Kalvoda's painting is an eloquent example of his deep relationship with the Czech landscape. Kalvoda, one of the leading representatives of Czech landscape painting at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, here captures a typical rural motif - a path leading through a grain field to an undulating landscape with a view of distant mountains. His painting style is characterized by soft brush strokes and a sensitive approach to color, with earthy tones combined with pastel shades of the sky being dominant. Kalvoda was known for his ability to capture the changing atmosphere of the landscape and its mood, which is also evident in this work, where the calm and harmonious atmosphere of a summer day in the Czech countryside stands out.

      ALOIS KALVODA (Czech / Bohemian 1875 - 1934) - Birch grove

      Est: -

around 1905 | technique: oil on canvas | 30.5 x 31 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description The painting is an exceptional example of Art Nouveau landscape painting, where the emphasis is on the decorative stylization of nature. This square format, which is typical for Art Nouveau, refers to the composition and aesthetics that we can also observe in the works of Gustav Klimt or Carl Moll. As with Klimt and Moll, Kalvoda in this work captures nature not as a realistic view, but as a harmonious pattern of lines and colors. The depiction of a birch grove with significant use of light and shadow creates an almost ornamental character that evokes a sense of calm and well-being, typical of art nouveau painting. Here, Kalvoda perfectly follows the Art Nouveau principles and depicts the landscape not only as a place, but as an emotional and aesthetic experience.

1901 | technique: oil on canvas | 27.5 x 33.5 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description The painting by the prominent Czech painter Alois Kalvoda, created in 1901, presents a landscape motif with a delicately expressive handwriting that combines the influences of art nouveau and symbolism. Kalvod's style is characterized by his poetic landscape paintings, in which he often depicted the Czech landscape in a mysterious atmosphere. This work is dominated by a melancholic autumn landscape scene, where the tree composition and water reflections create a suggestive mood.

Alois Kalvoda is one of the leading Czech landscape painters of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. From 1892 to 1898 he studied at the Academy under Professor Julius Mařák. The loose brushstrokes, the suppression of strict academic contours, the play of light on the water surface and hints of branches or bunches of grasses all point to the artist's consistent study of the French Impressionists, especially Claude Monet. The undulating and "floating" brushstrokes, which contrast with the minutely detailed records of the surrounding vegetation, demonstrate a masterful grasp of technique. ALOIS KALVODA 1875 - 1934 - BY THE RIVER

      Est: -

The image of a summer motif from the shore embedded in the water surface is a representative work of Alois Kalvoda, a student of Mařák's landscape specialty. Here, in a square format, the artist lets the natural color of the water surface and adjacent aquatic vegetation clearly resonate, a narrow path winds around the shore. The trees are shrouded in a shimmering morning haze. After his studies at the AVU, Kalvoda spent his studies in Paris and Munich. He gradually deviated from Mařák's school of painting melancholic landscapes and moved towards a more decorative concept of landscape in color and motif. He painted simple motifs of the Czech region, meadows, hillsides, birch trees, views of the region between the trunks of trees standing in the foreground or in the background of the hillside. ALOIS KALVODA 1875 - 1934 - GIRL FROM SLOVÁCKO IN AN ALLEY

      Est: -

Alois Kalvoda belongs to the leading Czech landscape painters of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the years 1892 - 1898, he studied at the Academy with Professor Julio Mařák. The teacher's romantic conception of the Kalvoda landscape influenced him only for a short time, but he applied his approach to students throughout his teaching career. The vitalistic motif of a costumed girl by a flowering tree is one of the most attractive works for collectors, as we rarely encounter figural staffage at Kalvoda. The subject caught the painter's eye so much that he paid a lot of attention to the entire segment of the girl in the middle of the blooming vegetation and processed the individual elements and plant species in such a way that the composition can almost be defined botanically. According to the inscription, it was taken in Radějov, at the foot of the White Carpathians. This area in the Hodonín region was often the source of Kalvoda's landscape subjects. ALOIS KALVODA 1875 - 1934 - SUMMER IN A VILLAGE

      Est: -

Alois Kalvoda concentrated on rural cottages in the landscape, harvest, forest landscapes, atmospheric phenomena, streams and ponds. He did not favor the melancholic concept of a dreamy landscape. He was inspired by the simple motifs of the Moravian landscape from the region of Břeclav or Strážnice. The verisimilitude and plasticity with which he builds the landscape almost architecturally gives the composition spatial dynamics and, in combination with the sharp summer light and hard shadows, it looks very realistic. Alois Kalvoda's early work represents a unique example of his experimental position, when he experimented with artistic form and plasticity of color and tried to capture the expression and the flowing dress of a young girl. Later, he painted simple motifs of the Bohemian region, meadows, hillsides, birches, views of the region between the trunks of trees standing in the foreground or on the hillsides in the background with a significantly smoother handwriting, but he did not avoid plastic textures or strong colors. Alois Kalvoda is one of the leading Czech landscape painters at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the years 1892-98 he studied at the Academy with Professor Julius Mařák. The teacher's romantic conception of the landscape of Kalvoda only briefly influenced him, but he applied his approach to students throughout his pedagogical career. In 1900, thanks to Hlávka's scholarship, he had the opportunity to undertake a study trip to Paris and a year later to Munich. The presented work Lovers belongs to the works in the manuscript of which the influences of modern Western painting can be clearly distinguished. Loose brushstrokes, the suppression of strict academic contours, the play of lights on the water surface and hints of branches or tufts of grass all point to the author's consistent study of French Impressionists, especially Claude Monet. The theme of two lovers during the night reception makes the work very interesting for collectors, as landscape creation without figural staffage by Alois Kalvoda completely prevails. Alois Kalvoda focused on cottages in the countryside, harvest, forest landscape, atmospheric phenomena, streams and ponds. He did not participate in the melancholy concept of dreamy landscapes. He was inspired by simple motifs of the Moravian landscapes around Břeclav or Strážnice. The credibility and plasticity with which he paints the ripening ears of wheat provides the sovereign certainty of the modern painter's hand. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "Al. Kalvoda"
