Wassily Kandinsky Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1866 - d. 1944

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky ( 16 December [O.S. 4 December] 1866 – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as the pioneer of abstract art.[1] Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa (today Ukraine), where he graduated at Grekov Odessa Art school. He enrolled at the University of Moscow, studying law and economics. Successful in his profession—he was offered a professorship (chair of Roman Law) at the University of Dorpat (today Tartu, Estonia)—Kandinsky began painting studies (life-drawing, sketching and anatomy) at the age of 30.

In 1896, Kandinsky settled in Munich, studying first at Anton Ažbe's private school and then at the Academy of Fine Arts. He returned to Moscow in 1914, after the outbreak of World War I. Following the Russian Revolution, Kandinsky "became an insider in the cultural administration of Anatoly Lunacharsky"[2] and helped establish the Museum of the Culture of Painting.[3] However, by then "his spiritual outlook... was foreign to the argumentative materialism of Soviet society",[4] and opportunities beckoned in Germany, to which he returned in 1920. There he taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933. He then moved to France, where he lived for the rest of his life, becoming a French citizen in 1939 and producing some of his most prominent art. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944.

- Mixed media on paper. 13.58 x 10.24 in. Stamped with the monogram and dated 'VK16'. The years of this work were a time of great personal change for Kandinsky, following his return to Russia after the outbreak of World War I. On 1 August 1914, the Russian artist had to flee Munich and abandon the country in which he had lived for eighteen years. Forced to cease his activities with Der Blaue Reiter and to leave behind most of his possessions and artwork, Kandinsky was isolated from much of his personal and artistic history, leading to a significant change in his art. Lack of funds and space limited his ability to paint in oils, but he continued to create in ink and watercolour, working simultaneously on the fairy-tale imagery of his so-called "bagatelles", alongside purely abstract compositions that reveal his absorption. of the aesthetics and principles of the Russian avant-garde. The lyrical subtlety of this work skillfully blends the more figurative subjects of Kandinsky’s fantastical landscape images with the animated dynamism of his pre-war abstract compositions. This drawing appears to be “rotational,” as if different parts were drawn from different perspectives, and it clearly distils representational motifs such as mountains and clouds into abstract hieroglyphics. As in many of Kandinsky’s works from this period, the composition relies on a centrifugal focus, binding together multiple pictorial elements in a knot suspended in an undefined spatial context. According to Endicott Barnett, this work bears a very close resemblance to two other drawings, archived under numbers 432 and 445 of his Catalogue Raisonné, respectively in the collections of the Mead Art Museum, Amherst, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. The hammer price of this lot will be paid in full to the Fondazione Gruppo Abele, Turin.
