Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky ( 16 December [O.S. 4 December] 1866 – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as the pioneer of abstract art.[1] Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa (today Ukraine), where he graduated at Grekov Odessa Art school. He enrolled at the University of Moscow, studying law and economics. Successful in his profession—he was offered a professorship (chair of Roman Law) at the University of Dorpat (today Tartu, Estonia)—Kandinsky began painting studies (life-drawing, sketching and anatomy) at the age of 30.
In 1896, Kandinsky settled in Munich, studying first at Anton Ažbe's private school and then at the Academy of Fine Arts. He returned to Moscow in 1914, after the outbreak of World War I. Following the Russian Revolution, Kandinsky "became an insider in the cultural administration of Anatoly Lunacharsky"[2] and helped establish the Museum of the Culture of Painting.[3] However, by then "his spiritual outlook... was foreign to the argumentative materialism of Soviet society",[4] and opportunities beckoned in Germany, to which he returned in 1920. There he taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933. He then moved to France, where he lived for the rest of his life, becoming a French citizen in 1939 and producing some of his most prominent art. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944.

Overall in very good condition Erläuterungen / Comments Bei "Stichi bez slov" handelt es sich um Kandinskys erste Holzschnittfolge, die er während eines Aufenthaltes in Moskau im Oktober 1903 konzipierte. Bis auf eine Ausnahme, "Ewigkeit", tragen alle dreizehn Drucke im Unterrand den geschnittenen Titel in kyrillischer Schrift. Der Titelholzschnitt befindet sich auf dem Umschlag vorne, das Kolophon hinten, alle übrigen Holzschnitte sind jeweils auf der rechten Seite aufgeklebt. Wie aus dem Kolophon hervorgeht, wurde der Band in der Stroganovschen Lehranstalt in Moskau hergestellt. Die Auflagenhöhe konnte laut Roethel nicht ermittelt werden. Da es sich bei den bekannten Exemplaren jedoch ausschliesslich um Handdrucke handelt, dürfte sie vermutlich gering gewesen sein. Eine eigenhändig nummerierte und signierte Vorzugsausgabe hat Kandinsky wohl erst 1918 erstellt. Seltenes Album mit frühesten Holzschnitten von bestechender Schönheit. "Stichi bez slov" is Kandinsky’s first woodcut series, which he conceived during a stay in Moscow in October 1903. With one exception, "Ewigkeit", all thirteen prints bear the carved title in Cyrillic script at the lower margin. The title woodcut is on the front cover, the colophon at the back, and all other woodcuts are each pasted on the right-hand side. As indicated in the colophon, the volume was produced at the Stroganov School in Moscow. According to Roethel, the edition size could not be determined. However, since all known copies are hand-printed, it was presumably small. Kandinsky apparently did not produce a hand-numbered and signed special edition until 1918. A rare album with the earliest woodcuts of striking beauty. Unsere frühe Komposition weckt Erinnerungen an Figuren der slawischen Folklore und an russische Märchen, in denen der Wald eine besondere und zentrale Bedeutung einnimmt. Der Wald dient den Akteuren als Grenzbereich zwischen der vertrauten Welt und einem fremden und bedrohlichen Reich, in dem es nicht selten zu magischen Begegnungen kommt und wo Menschen Prüfungen zu bestehen haben. Die vier Frauen mit ihren edlen Gewändern und prunkvollen Kopfbedeckungen zeugen vom Interesse des Künstlers an volkstümlichen Überlieferungen, an Religion und Mythologie. This sheet is a rare hand-printed impression. Kandinsky began working with woodcuts from 1903 onwards. Our early composition evokes memories of figures from Slavic folklore and Russian fairy tales, in which the forest holds a special and central significance. The forest serves the protagonists as a borderland between the familiar world and a strange and threatening realm, where magical encounters are not uncommon and people must undergo trials. The four women with their noble robes and splendid headdresses testify to the artist's interest in folk traditions, religion, and mythology.
