      • KANE, ART (1925-1995) Andy Warhol as the Golden Boy, 1962.
        Jun. 21, 2023

KANE, ART (1925-1995) Andy Warhol as the Golden Boy, 1962.

        Est: $1,200 - $1,800

KANE, ART (1925-1995) Andy Warhol as the Golden Boy, 1962. Dye transfer print, 27 5/8 x 21 1/2 inches (702 x 547 mm) on larger sheet, signed in black ink on recto, inscribed "To Arville from Art/Nov. 1977" in blue ink (margin). Fine. Framed. As noted by Jonathan Kane: "My father, Art Kane, was proud of the Warhol image and had a relationship with Andy going back to when he was a celebrated young art director; he was one of the first to hire Warhol regularly as an illustrator and recognized his brilliance early on. Fast-forward a few years to Kane's stratospheric rise to star photographer: the Champion Paper Company asked them both to interpret each other. Warhol did a charming pencil drawing of my father, while Kane decided to paint Warhol's face and body gold, representing him as the golden boy of the art world as well as riffing on the gold-leaf that Warhol used abundantly in his famous I. Miller shoe advertisement designs. At the same shoot, Kane also photographed Warhol's bare foot, also painted gold, with a pile of I. Miller shoes. My father initially rejected that image in favor of the bust portrait seen here. The foot variant remained unseen and unpublished until we rediscovered it and included it in the monograph Art Kane published by Reel Art Press in 2014." From the artist; to a private collector, 1970s; Christie's New York: Thursday, April 6, 2017, Photographs Including Property Sold to Benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation, lot 190; to a private collection. Pair of c-prints on Kodak paper USA, circa 1977 Art Kane (1925-1995) – American photographer Inscribed, signed and dated ‘To Jimmy with much gratitude Art Kane June 77.’ Photographs originally appeared in Viva Magazine, August 1974 Full margins; each matted with one work framed Image dimensions, each: 19 ½ x 13 in. (49.5 x 33 cm.) Sheet dimensions, each: 23 ¼ x 17 in. (59.1 x 43.2 cm.) Matted dimensions: 25 ½ x 18 in. (64.8 x 45.7 cm.) Framed dimensions: 16 x 18 ½ in. (40.6 x 47 cm.) Good condition Provenance Acquired by present owner from artist Originally appearing as a spread in “Viva, The International Magazine for Women” in August 1974, these images by Art Kane were accompanied by a poem written by Paul Mitchell. An ode to women’s pubic hair styles, these two works by Kane are strikingly composed, transforming the women’s bodies into sculptural arrangements. Condition: Unframed work: Print affixed to overmat with seven pieces of masking tape verso. Overmat placement consistent with yellowing of print, presumably from light exposure. Small anomaly in print in stomach area perhaps from liquid drip, otherwise in good condition. Second print not examined out of frame. Art Kane (American, 1925-1995) Art Kane was one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. A bold visionary, Kane’s work encompassed fashion, editorial, celebrity portraiture, travel, and nudes with a relentless and innovative eye. Like his contemporaries, Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton, Kane gravitated toward strong color, eroticism and surreal humor. Kane pioneered photographic storytelling by investing his images with metaphor and poetry, effectively turning photography into illustration. Kane also contributed to the major fashion magazines of his era as well as creating startling ad campaigns for the fashion and beauty industry. In his lifetime Kane was honored by almost every photo-design organization in the United States: American Society of Magazine Photographers, Photographer of the Year, Newspaper Guild of America, Page One Award, Augustus Saint-Gaudens Medal for Distinguished Achievement, Cooper-Union, New York Art Directors Club, (14) Medals and (28) Awards of Distinctive Merit.
