Anish Kapoor Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1954 -

Born in India in 1954, Anish Kapoor is a contemporary sculptor and painter, best known for his large-scale abstract sculptures. After moving to London in the 1970s, he studied at the Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Anish Kapoor's sculptures use a variety of materials, including mirrors, stone, and PVC to create geometric and abstract shapes like the Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago's Millennium Park. Likewise, paintings by Anish Kapoor are often modern explorations into color and shapes.

Receiving a knighthood in 2013 for his work in the visual arts, Kapoor is also known for owning exclusive rights to use the color Vantablack, described as the blackest black pigment available. Anish Kapoor's prints and sculptures are highly prized by collectors of contemporary art. Browse abstract paintings at Invaluable to find pieces that call to you, from renowned masters or talented new-comers.

Spot-mounted to mat's back. - Paper slightly buckled, tiny, hardly visible stain on upper left, all in all very good and impeccably fine. One of 200 copies. - The work of Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor is characterised by his exploration of colour, its pigments and the resulting effective effects. The viewer is confronted with works that are simple and reduced in their formal language but whose monochrome colour allows them to achieve their full effect. An unreal, disconcerting beauty fades in and offers the opportunity to lose oneself magically in colour.

SIR ANISH KAPOOR C.B.E., R.A. (BRITISH-INDIAN 1954-) GREEN SHADOW - 2011 The complete set of four etchings, 10/39, signed and numbered verso, published by Charles Booth-Clibborn, under his imprint, The Paragon Press, London (4) each sheet 72.5cm x 96.5cm (28.5in x 38in) Footnote: Anish Kapoor is one of the most successful and highly regarded sculptors of his generation. Born in Mumbai in 1954, he has lived and worked in London since the 1970s. Though well known for his sculpture and conceptual art, his works in print are equally compelling, with a similar sensibility to his three-dimensional forms. Investigation into the techniques used to create his desired results reveal a high-level of technical engagement not dissimilar to that required in his sculpture. ‘Green Shadow’ was published by Paragon Press and the artist’s aim was to convey an intensity of rich colour in print by overlaying at least two colours. He began by creating a digital image of gradated tonal forms that was transferred to two photo-polymer plates with half-tone screens. However, in the printing, they did not manage to perfectly overlay the dots and so a moiré, or rippling, effect was created. Kapoor did not view this as an error but rather embraced the resulting visual intensity and used it across the edition. As a result, each print within the edition is unique as the moiré varies according to the atmospheric conditions and pressure of the press. The end results have a three-dimensional quality, with the entrancing impression of a void – a recurring theme of Kapoor’s work. On the subject, he has said ‘the void is not silent. I have always thought of it more and more as a transitional space, an in-between space’ and ‘a void object is not an empty object; its potential for generative possibility is ever present.’ In ‘Green Shadow,’ the finished set’s appearance is deceptively simple but compelling, drawing the viewer in and creating various possibilities in meaning.

SIR ANISH KAPOOR C.B.E., R.A. (INDIAN/BRITISH 1954-) NO. 9, FROM 'TWELVE ETCHINGS' - 2007 Colour etching, 38/40, signed in pencil to margin, numbered verso, published by Paragon Press, London the sheet 77cm x 90cm (30.25in x 35.5in) Contemporary Editions, London These striking and evocative works are from the portfolio of twelve etchings published by Paragon Press in 2007, in an edition of 40. This was Kapoor’s third project with Paragon Press and the process reveals the technical skill and collaborative approach required to generate a successful series of prints for an artist as exacting and specific as Kapoor, who once stated ‘Artists don’t make objects. Artists make mythologies.’ For this series, Kapoor worked closely with Peter Kosowicz of Thumbprint editions. On visits to the studio, Kapoor worked onto the plates themselves and then reviewed proofs after Peter finessed the technicalities, eventually selecting 15 works, although at this stage all printing and proofing had been done in monochrome. As a result, it was decided that they would publish two series: History, a portfolio of all 15 plates printed in black & white; and then 12 Etchings, a smaller grouping printed in colour. The addition of colour to the plates required extensive proofing and Kosowicz remembers the particular challenge of trying to achieve Kapoor’s desired effect, indicating that it was ‘difficult to retain the soft edges of Kapoor’s forms whilst at the same time keeping their tone strong.’As Paragon states in their introduction to the series, ‘the introduction of colour drastically changes our perception of these images, charging them emotionally. Soothing blue has a calming effect in some, whilst the use of energetic red in others adds a bodily and sexual element, insinuating blood, the womb and the female sexual organ. 12 Etchings illuminates a core aspect of Kapoor’s practice – the interaction of colour and form.’ Seeing them in person it is hard not to agree, the resulting works are compelling, the fluid, morphing forms feel somehow primal and rich and the varying velvety colours evoke radically different moods and associations.
