    Andrée Karpelès (1885-1956)

    Est: €1,900 - €2,300

BATEAU-TOMBEREAU 1910–1920 Oil on canvas, 33.5×46 cm (50×62 cm). Signed lower left "A. Karpelès". Excellent gallery condition, authentic period craquelure. Mounted in the original wooden frame with a fine patina that corresponds in colour with the palette of the work. The work is a representative and highly attractive collector`s example of the oeuvre of the French painter and graphic artist Andrée Karpelès. The artist, who spent her childhood in Calcutta, masterfully combines in this work her European painterly training with a deep inner fascination with Indian culture and landscape. The subject is a traditional cargo boat (tombereau) on a calm water surface, probably in the Kashmir region, as confirmed by the monumental silhouette of mountains in the background. Stylistically, this is a mature position of Post-Impressionist Realism with elements of Symbolism. Karpelès here renounces fine descriptive detail in favour of a generous composition and solid volumes. The handling of colour valeurs is fascinating – the artist uses a narrow range of earthy ochres, muted greens, and silvery tones that evoke in the viewer a sensation of absolute calm and contemplation. The reflection of the boat on the water surface lends the scene a vertical order and underscores its almost meditative character. The work is not a mere travelogue record but a perceptive interpretation of the Indian "spirit of place" (genius loci). It is precisely this ability to synthesise the Western formal language and Eastern spirituality that makes Andrée Karpelès one of the most interesting figures of the Paris School (École de Paris) at the beginning of the 20th century.
