ADOLF KARPELLUS (1869-1919) KÜNSTLERHAUS XXXVI. JAHRESAUSSTELUNG. 1910. 24 1/2x18 inches, 61x45 3/4 cm. J. Weiner, Vienna. Condition B+: replaced loss in lower right corner; minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; minor creases at edges. Karpellus was a painter, illustrator and poster designer who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the Academie Julian in Paris. It was during his time at the latter that he was introduced to the world of French poster art. When he returned to Austria, he became one of the preeminent and most prolific Austrian poster artists in the field. As such, in 1905 he was accepted into the prestigious "Society of Fine Artists in Austria," (Gesellschaft Bildender Künstler Österreichs - Künstlerhaus) and that same year, the organization held an exhibition of his posters. Between 1906 and 1910, Karpellus designed four different posters for exhibitions at the Künstlerhaus. Here, his Classical, mythological figure, set against the Vienna skyline, seems to suggest a crowning of a victor in this year's show. Denscher contends that Karpellus and Alois Hans Schram (who also designed posters for the exhibition over the years) were instrumental in "the emergence of modern poster art in Austria" (Denscher p. 40). Rare. We could find only one other copy at auction.

        Sep. 29, 2016

PEKAREK ES LEDERER BECS ORIGINAL VINTAGE AUSTRIAN TEA POSTER BY ADOLF KARPELLUS 1905

        Est: $1,200 - $1,800

This charming image was created circa 1905 for the Pekarek Tea Company in Vienna, Austria by Adolf Karpellus. The depiction of the well-dressed Chinese gentlemen connotes the high quality of the teas sold by this company as well as their origins. Pekarek & Co. was founded in 1882 by Moritz Pekarek in Vienna and his aggressive business talents provided the impetus for the growth of the company. The Pekarek family still controls this company to this day. Adolf Karpellus (1869-1919) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Paris where he became a poster, postcard and printmaker. His main interests were portraits, landscapes, still life's and genre scenes. He was a member of the Viennese artist cooperative since 1905. During WWI he designed a number of posters for the Central Powers. Although he is primarily known for his WWI images, he was very involved in commercial advertising as well. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. KEYWORDS: AUSTRIA, TEA, ASIAN, CHINESE

The Trau Tea Company was one of the first to sell the Chinese product in Europe and in this case, Austria. By depicting the 4 Chinese gentlemen savoring their tea in a luxurious setting the artist, Adolf Karpellus, implies that is the finest product from this exotic origin. The enjoyment of tea has been a major pleasure in Austria for over 150 years. This poster is very rare. Karpellus studied art in both Paris and Vienna, and is primarily known as a painter. However, his studies at Paris' Academie Julian introduced him to the world of French poster art. When he returned to Austria he was one of the first specialists in that field. In 1905, a show of his posters was held at the Wiener Künstlerhaus, an artistic organization based in an eponymous building on Vienna's Ringstrasse. Artists breaking away from the Künstlerhaus in 1897 went on to form the Secession movement. Karpellus, who was also a member of the organization, designed at least two posters for subsequent exhibitions at the Künstlerhaus, in 1907 and 1910. His classical, mythological figure, set against the Vienna skyline, seems to suggest a crowning of a victor in this year's show. Denscher contends that Karpellus, and Alois Hans Schram (who also designed posters for the exhibition over the years) were instrumental in "the emergence of modern poster art in Austria" (Denscher p 40). This is the rarer of the two posters Karpellus designed for the Künstlerhaus.
