As a student he took painting lessons in Prague. From 1899 to 1905, he was a student of Franz von Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at Heinrich Knirr's private school. During this time, he became friends with Jules Pascin and Paul Klee. From 1906 to 1907, he travelled to Portugal and Spain, where he met Juan Gris. Kars dealt intensively with Velazquez and Goya. From 1908 until the First World War he mostly lived in Paris. Here he came into contact with fellow artists Jules Pascin, Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire (Wilhelm Albert Włodzimierz Apolinary de Wąż-Kostrowicki) and Max Jacob. During the war, Kars stayed in Belgium. In 1937, as part of the "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) campaign, six of his works were confiscated from German public collections. In 1939 Kars returned to Paris. He fled to Lyon and in 1942 moved to his sister in Switzerland, which was safe for him as a Jew. In despair over the persecution of the Jews, he committed suicide in 1945. Kars was a member of the Salon d'automne, the Salon des indepéndents, the Salon des Tuileries and the Prague Secession. He had exhibitions with Hans Goltz in Munich, Arnot, Paris, in the Salon d'automne, with B. Weil and Bernier, Paris, and others. His works can be found in various museums in Europe. Est: $250 - $500

Georges Kars (Czech, 1880-1945) - Female Nude, Ink and Red Chalk on Paper, 1928. Signed. 55x43cm. Georges Kars (b.1880 in Kralupy – d.1945 in Geneva) was a Czech painter known for his landscapes and nude paintings. Georges Kars was born to a German Jewish family. His father was a miller. When he was 18, Kars was sent to study in art in Munich with Heinrich Knirr and Franz von Stuck. From 1905 he traveled to Madrid where he met Juan Gris and immersed himself in the painting styles of Velasquez and Goya. In 1908, Kars arrived in Paris and settled in Montmartre at the time of the Cubist revolution, which also had an influence on his work, he met Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo well connected to the artist community. His work was interrupted by the First World War which he spent on the Galician Front and in Russian captivity. He renewed his friendship with Pascin and frequented Chagall, Apollinaire, Max Jacob, the art critic Maurice Raynal and the Greek painter Demetrius Galanis. He spent the summer of 1923 in Segalas, Hautes-Pyrenees region, with Suzanne Valadon’s family. An exhibition of his work took place at the Berthe Weill gallery in 1928. In 1933, he bought a house in Tossa de Mar near Barcelona. Along with a group of artists (Rafael Benet, Enric Casanovas and Alberto del Castillo) he inaugurated the Museu Municipal De Tossa Del Mar on 1 September 1935 as a modern art museum. He returned to live in Caulaincourt street in Montmartre, Paris, in 1936. When World War II started and German occupied Paris, he took refuge in Lyon where he started to draw children with a sad expression. In December 1942 he moved to the safety of his sister's home in Switzerland. Away from France, he started to make a large number of drawings and paintings depicting refugees seeking shelter. He committed suicide on 5 February 1945, most likely after receiving news of the deaths of relatives. Florent Fels, who met Georges Kars before 1930, writes: Although I lived in the strangest environment of Montmartre, next to artists with the most twisted mind, Kars stands there, singularly well balanced. He is so witty that he could be a cousin of Hoffmann's. We always expect him, just like the magician from Konigsberg to create a burlesque miracle like turning the Sacre-Coeur church into an illuminated pool for the One Thousand and One Nights or to create some tales worthy of The Serapion Brethren. When his wife Nora died in 1966, the contents of his atelier were auctioned at the Palais Galliera in Paris. Pierre Levy, a French industrialist and art collector, and Oscar Ghez acquired an important part of the artworks. In 1983 the Modern Art Museum of Troyes staged the first Kars retrospective. Jiří (Georges) Kars (1880-1945) LESNÍ ZÁTIŠÍ Olej na plátně, 65x54 cm, sign. na zadní straně "KARS", na zadní straně opatřeno výstavním štítkem z Kastel Gallery. Rámováno. Posouzeno prof. PhDr. Tomášem Vlčkem, CSc. Z posudku PhDr. Stav B/C. K této položce bude kupci připočtena snížená aukční přirážka ve výši 12% z kladívkové ceny + 21% DPH z celé částky. Jiří (Georges) Kars - jeden z příslušníků první generace českých moderních umělců. Umělecká studia absolvoval v roce 1905 na Akademii v Mnichově. Zpočátku byl okouzlen impresionismem Maxe Liebermanna a v letech 1906–1908 dosáhl značného mistrovství v bezprostředním záznamu impresí z přírodních scén a městských parků. English Translation Jiří (Georg) Kars (1880-1945) FOREST STILL LIFE Oil on canvas, 65x54 cm, signed on the reverse "KARS", exhibition label from the Kastel Gallery on the reverse. Framed. With an expert opinion by prof. PhDr. Tomáš Vlček, CSc. „[...] The still life is painted as a living tissue of dramatic opposites of brown and green tones. The arabesques of organic shapes of nature here in Kars`s painting recalls the influence of Paul Gauguin`s works. But at the same time it evokes in the dynamics of brushstrokes the motives and principles of French Fauvism, which Kars shared mainly with his contemporary André Derain.[...]“. Condition B/C.
