              Rare Shiro Kasamatso Deer Woodblock. Professionally framed. In frame measures 19 1/4" x 14 7/8" x 1". Total Weight 3 lbs. Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a Japanese engraver and print maker trained in the Shin-Hanga and S?saku-Hanga styles of woodblock printing.Kasamatsu was born in Tokyo in 1898 and apprenticed at the age of 13 to Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878–1973), a traditional master of Bijin-ga, pictures of beautiful women. Kasamatsu however took an interest in landscape and was given the pseudonym Shiro by his teacher, which he used as a signature mark in his prints. Kasamatsu made woodblock prints for the publisher Sh?zabur? Watanabe from 1919. Almost all the woodblocks were destroyed in a fire in Watanabe's print shop following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Around 50 prints were published by Watanabe by the late 1940s. Kasamatsu began to partner with Unsodo in Kyoto from the 1950s and produced nearly 102 prints by 1960. He also began to print and publish on his own in the S?saku-Hanga style. Vertical oban. Signed Shiro with seal in the image, printed signature Shiro Kasamatsu at the margin Shiro Kasamatsu; publisher Unsodo. Titled Tsukiyo (Moonlight Night). By the light of the moon, seen through an avenue of trees, a black cat stalks the night. SIZE of the sheet 40.4 x 27.3 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear and slight browning of paper. Minor material loss to bottom-right edge, minor ink stains, firmly mounted to cardboard. Illegible handwriting to the left margin. Provenance: Estate of Wolfgang Zacke (1942-2022), co-founder of Galerie Zacke, thence by descent. Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a Japanese artist who found early success. His prints were seen by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919, and he published more than 50 prints with them by the late 1940's. He was part of the shin-hanga movement, which was created from the late Meiji era until World War II, showing a mixture of traditional Japanese and modern western elements. In the early 1950s Kasamatsu changed his publishing partner to Unsodo in Kyoto, creating 102 prints for him over an eight-year period (1952-1960). These are nearly all in shin hanga style, showing traditional subjects such as landscapes and few interiors.

Signed Shiro Kasamatsu along with Unsodo publisher seal on the left margin (first seal). Entitled Waters at Kiba. Vertical inscription along the left margin (top). The print depicts the Kiba area in Tokyo, Japan. Kiba is a waterfront district located in the eastern part of Tokyo, known for its historical importance as a hub of transportation and trade during the Edo period (1603-1868). It was a bustling area with canals, rivers, and warehouses, and it has been a popular subject for artists and printmakers. SIZE of the sheet 41 x 27.2 cm Condition: Great impression, and vivid colors. Very minor material loss on the lower right corner with some ink stains along the right margin. Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a renowned Japanese print artist known for his contributions to the shin-hanga movement. He began his artistic training at the age of 13 under Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1973), studying painting and printmaking. In 1919, he caught the attention of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962) who commissioned him to design woodblock prints. In the 1950s, Kasamatsu changed his publishing partner to Unsōdō in Kyoto, creating over 100 prints for them, mostly in shin-hanga style featuring traditional subjects. This partnership provided him with a stable income and enabled him to explore other artistic endeavors.
