Luigi Kasimir Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, Lithographer

Born in 1881 in the country now known as Slovenia, Luigi Kasimir was one of the first artists to completely develop the color etching technique. He did this by first doing a pastel sketch and then layering and coloring two to six etching plates. He then produced them one after another by hand, creating one-of-a-kind vividly colored prints by Luigi Kasimir. When for sale, these etchings are often pencil signed.

He designed a bookplate for Sigmund Freud, the famous psychologist. Freud enjoyed the artist's work so much he hung Luigi Kasimir's interpretation of the Roman Forum in his consultation room. He often produced landscape works, and many Luigi Kasimir etchings for sale reflect his love of monuments and tourist locations. Luigi Kasimir prints can be viewed at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Enthusiasts of the medium can find antique etchings at auction and at Invaluable.

Luigi Kasimir (1881-1962) Austrian, Original Color Etching, "Frankfurt"

    Est: $100 - $200

Luigi Kasimir (1881-1962) Austrian, Original Color Etching, "Frankfurt". Germany. Estate signed by his son, Robert Kasimir, in pencil lower margin.  Overall Size: 29 x 23 in. Sight Size: 18 x 13 1/2 in. Austrian-born etcher and painter, Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 in Pettau, a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the colored etching. Up until this point, prints were usually hand colored with the color being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir was a pioneer in the colored etching technique. He started with a sketch, usually in pastel, andthen transferred the design on as many as four to six plates. He printed one after the other and applied the color on the plate--all done by hand. Luigi Kasimir died in 1962.
