Izidor Kaufmann Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1853 - d. 1921

Isidor Kaufmann (Hungarian: Kaufman(n) Izidor, Hebrew: ??????? ???????; March 22, 1853 in Arad – 1921 in Vienna) was an Austro-Hungarian painter of Jewish themes. Having devoted his career to genre painting, he traveled throughout Eastern Europe in search of scenes of Jewish, often Hasidic life.

Life and career: Born to Hungarian Jewish parents in Arad, Kingdom of Hungary (presently in Romania), Kaufmann was originally destined for a commercial career, and could fulfill his wish to become a painter only later in life.

In 1875, he went to the Landes-Zeichenschule in Budapest, where he remained for one year. In 1876, he left for Vienna, but being refused admission to the Academy of Fine Arts there, he became a pupil of the portrait painter Joseph Matthäus Aigner. He then entered the Malerschule of the Vienna Academy, and later became a private pupil of Professor Trenkwald.

His most noted paintings refer to the life of Jews in Poland. They include: Der Besuch des Rabbi (the original of which was owned by Emperor Franz Joseph I, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum), Schachspieler, Der Zweifler (for which he received the gold medal at the Weltausstellung of 1873).

Kaufmann's other honors include: the Baron Königswarter Künstler-Preis, the gold medal of the Emperor of Germany, a gold medal of the International Exhibition at Munich, and a medal of the third class at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.

One of his most prominent students was Lazar Krestin.

Isidor Kaufmann, Portrait of a Jew

          Est: €4,800 - €9,600

Portrait of a Jew. Oil on wood. Depiction of a male figure with gray hair and round glasses in three-quarter profile. 12 x 9.6cm Signed on the left edge of the image: Isidor Kaufmann. Verso inscribed 12-9.5. framed Isidor Kaufmann was a Hungarian portrait and genre painter. The trained bank clerk first attended the drawing school in Budapest and later studied at the Vienna Academy. On his travels to Hungary, Poland and Galicia he visited Hasidic 'Shtetl', districts with a high Jewish population, or so-called 'Shtiblach', small private synagogues, and as an artist he became a close observer of social and religious life there. He processed what he saw into detailed depictions of Jewish life and meaningful portraits. The present, sensitively executed portrait of a man with glasses and a pen tucked behind his ear is an example of his ability to artistically capture a moment, a facial expression and a mood. Even the Austrian Emperor Franz-Josef bought a work by Kaufmann and helped him to break through in his career as a painter. His works can be seen at the Tate Gallery London, the Jewish Museum New York and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, among others. In 1995, the Jewish Museum in Vienna presented an extensive solo exhibition of his work. See Tobias G. Natter (ed.): Rabbiner, Bocher, Talmudschüler. Bilder des Wiener Malers Isidor Kaufmann 1853–1921, exhibition catalogue Jüdisches Museum Wien, Vienna 1995.
