    Max Kaus (1891-1977), 1922 German Color Lithograph, "Seated Nude Before a Mirror".  Condition as pictured. Overall Size: 17 x 21 in. Sight Size: 11 x 15 1/2 in.   Max Kaus was born in Berlin on March 11, 1981. He attended the School for Crafts and the Applied and Decorative Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. In 1913 he moved into his first studio, and a travel grant brought him to Paris in 1914. At the onset of World War I, however, he was forced to return home, where he volunteered as an ambulance driver and medical orderly in 1916; fortuitously, it was this volunteering that brought him in contact with several inspirational artists, including Erich Heckel, Anton Kerschbaumer, and Otto Herbig. It was at this time he began to focus on printmaking, namely lithography and woodcuts. After the war he supported himself by accepting commissions for decorative painting.   Kaus's first one-man show was at the Ferdinand Möller Gallery in 1919; after meeting Otto Mueller and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff at the "Free Secession" in 1920, he became a part of several artist's groups who furthered study of Expressionism in Berlin, but by the end of the 1920s he returned to the more classical roots of his youth and took a position as a teacher at the Master School for the Applied and Decorative Arts, teaching landscape painting and figurative drawing. In 1927 he was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize by the city of Nuremburg.   During the 1930's, Kaus traveled throughout Europe to study, and took a position a an art teacher the United States School in Berlin, but was increasingly exposed to persecution by the National Socialists. In 1937 his works were removed from museums and in 1938 he was forced to give up teaching until after the end of the war.   1949 saw his promotion to full professor—and, eventually, Deputy Director— at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin.  He continued to teach and create art well into his late life; he died in Berlin in 1977.

Kaus studied from 1908 to 1913 at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin (UAKGM) and in 1913 and 1914 at the Berlin Academy of Arts (AdK), as a painter with Erich Heckel and as a graphic artist with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Since 1926 he was a teacher at the Berlin-Charlottenburg Arts and Crafts School, and from 1937 to 1939 he was a teacher at the United State Schools (VS). In 1937, as part of the “Degenerate Art” campaign, a significant number of his works were confiscated from German museums and public collections. However, Kaus was able to remain a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts. There is certain evidence of his participation in 32 exhibitions during the National Socialist era. On July 15, 1945, he was appointed professor and deputy director at the Berlin University of Fine Arts (HfbK) under Karl Hofer. In 1959 Kaus retired. Kaus was a member of the Reich Association of Visual Artists in Germany and, from 1928, of the German Artists' Association and remained so until its forced dissolution in 1936. Kaus took part in the last annual exhibition of the German Artists' Association at the Hamburg Art Association with the portrait “Woman in the Mirror” (tempera on canvas). From 1951 to 1971 he was a board member of the re-established German Artists' Association, and from 1956 to 1963 he was its deputy chairman. Max Kaus received the Günter Wagner Prize from the Hanover Art Association in 1928 and the Berlin Art Prize in 1963. His written legacy has been in the German Art Archive in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg since 1987.
