Hide Kawanishi, Japanese 1894 -1965 Despite his isolation from the center of the sosaku hanga movement in Tokyo, Kawanishi was a core member of the movement. He first exhibited prints with the Nihon Sosaku-Kiyokai (Creative Print Association) in 1923, which he joined in 1932, and starting in 1931, he exhibited with Kokugakai (National Painting  Association) which he joined in 1935. He competed in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics. In commenting on his small colour pallet Kawanishi said, “Perhaps because my ancestral home is so dark and gloomy, I like to use primary colours in simple contrasting effects.” While Kawanishi may have seen Kobe as dark and gloomy, he loved living in this port town whose setting provided material and inspiration for many of his prints. “When I was a boy I used to go to a nearby bar for sailors and watch them having a good time. I’ve always liked the free and easy atmosphere of a port.”

(26 x 19.5 cm.) (10) NOTES This set, published in August 1946, is the last of a series of three, the other two being Tokyo kaiko zue [Recollections of Tokyo] (1945) and Nihon minzoku zufu [A pictorial album of customs of Japan] (March 1946) which represented a sentimental attempt by the Fugaku publishing house (set up by one of the directors of the pre-war publishing house Takamizawa) to capture the last vestiges of the flavour of pre-war Japan before it disappeared under the waves of enforced Western modernity. This set differs from the other two, as in this instance all the designs were original, whereas in the preceding sets some of the images were re-worked versions of pre-war designs.
