Paul Keene, Jr., 1920-2009, untitled, Three Musicians

      Est: $30,000 - $40,000

Paul Keene, Jr. 1920-2009 untitled, Three Musicians 1951-1955 oil on canvas 42 x 23 inches signed Provenance: The collection of Jonathan Clark and Lane Igoudin, PhD., Los Angeles, CA From Swann Galleries: Paul Keene was enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1949 to 1951. Keene absorbed the lessons of European modernism and enrolled at the Académie Julian. While in Paris, he founded the cooperative Galerie Huit with Raymond Hendler, shared an apartment with Sanford Greenberg, and studied with French modernist painter Fernand Léger. Keene exhibited with Picasso and Léger at the Salon de Mai. After return from Paris, in August of 1952, Keene received an Opportunity Fellowship from the John Hay Whitney Foundation to travel to Haiti. Keene had proposed a study of Haitian art and culture through his painting, with a particular interest in Voodoo and its African roots. With his fellowship, Keene had a studio and taught art courses at the Centre D'Art in Port-au-Prince, Haiti between 1952 and 1954. His time in Haiti had a tremendous impact on his painting - visually and spiritually. There Keene developed close ties to the Haitian artist community, including the artist Antonio Joseph, with whom he exhibited with twice in 1953. This tumultous, densely painted scene rhythmically alternates between figure and abstraction, pattern and form, ground and space. It reflects not only Keene's modernist approach to painting, but his visual expression of the real and the supernatural in Haitian culture. In his 1954 essay, Haitian Painters, Keene wrote that the "Haitian is able to identify and align himself intimately with either the unseen world or the one in which he actively lives." Here, Keene paints with a kinetic energy that beautifully fills the space between what is seen and unseen. Keene's Haitian art was collected at the time by Joseph H. Hirshorn and is found today in many institutional collections including those of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the La Salle University Art Museum, the Woodmere Art Museum and Villanova University.

Provenance: private collection, Philadelphia, PA. This extraordinary painting is an important artwork by Paul Keene. It is one of his finest 1950s paintings we have seen - a wonderfully vibrant synthesis of modernism and the Afro-Caribbean imagery Keene encountered in Haiti. Est: $20,000 - $30,000

PAUL F. KEENE, JR. (1920 - 2009) The Guitarist (Jazz Icon Series). Acrylic on paper, 1985. 1054x749 mm; 41 1/4x29 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in acrylic, lower left. Provenance: the estate of the artist. Music and color serve as the compositional key in Paul Keene's Jazz Icon Series. A master of the manipulation of scale, color, light, and a lifelong jazz music enthusiast brings Keene's anonymous portraits of jazz musicians to life. His use of a vibrant color palette to express his passion for jazz, characterized by improvisation and an energetic rhythm, reflects his passion for the medium. Music was a large part of Paul Keene's life, and his strong interest in blues and jazz began as a young boy. As a child, he was inspired by gospel music. As a teenager, he waited with his friends to see jazz musicians playing in the clubs in Philadelphia. Keene felt jazz was a rhythmic and unique language. He believed that to succeed as a fine artist, "…the work must sing out, and the viewer must hear it." He admired the musician Miles Davis and said he could "create a picture in your mind with his music." Biography courtesy of the Michener Art Museum. Consigned to support the Brandywine Workshop in Philadelphia and its legacy endowment campaign.

      Est: $6,000 - $10,000

Paul Keene (American, 1920-2009) Untitled Signed top right, acrylic on panel. Executed in the 1950s. (69 1/2 x 23 in. (176.5 x 58.4cm)) Provenance The Artist. Collection of Ben D. Bernstein (acquired directly from the above). Private Collection, Philadelphia (acquired directly from the above in the 1990s). Footnote: Note Paul F. Keene, Jr. grew up in North Philadelphia, certain from a young age that he wanted to pursue a career as an artist. He attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now University of the Arts) before enlisting in the Army Air Force during World War II, serving with the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group. Like many artists of his generation, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to travel abroad, studying at the Académie Julian in Paris for four years, where he was greatly influenced by Picasso, Léger and Matisse. While there, he also helped found Gallerie 8, a collective gallery for American artists working in Paris. Keene later received a John Jay Whitney Fellowship and spent two years teaching in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. These early experiences exposed Keene to mainstream European Modernism, as well as a variety of practices in Caribbean artistic production, which led to his self-described “abstract realist” style. Returning home to Philadelphia in the 1950s, Keene centered his focus on African-American life, in terms of cultural traditions, as well as his personal narrative and lived experience. As a teacher at Philadelphia College of Art, Temple University’s Tyler School, and a founding professor in the art department at Bucks County Community College, Keene greatly influenced the next generation of Philadelphia artists during his career, while maintaining his own prolific production. Keene once said “I simply need to find the means by which I can render visible my vision of my inner world, as well as my visual interaction with urban anxieties.” [1] Often using the theme of windows in his work, Keene painted landscapes and sky scenes to express this notion of inner and outer vision, and he also used window frames as painting frames to literally provide a window to the viewer. Untitled is presented this way, within a window frame, but gives less a passing moment in time, than evoking the daydream quality of gazing out the window, lost in one’s own thoughts. The figure here is splayed out over a field of vibrant color, juxtaposed over a cross and Keene’s familiar grid pattern, and framed on the right by three abstracted figures with bright halos encircling their heads. The human scale of the work also invites the comparison to a full-length mirror, looking inward to the artist’s inner thoughts and feelings, while bound within the frame. Whether window or mirror, the painting challenges the viewer face to face to envision the world from a new perspective.
