C8785)Felix Runcie Kelly (1914-1994) was an artist, illustrator, and stage-set designer who achieved critical acclaim in Britain during the twentieth century for distinctive architectural landscapes. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, he trained as a graphic artist before relocating to England in 1935 to work as a graphic designer.During the Second World War, Kelly served as a navigation officer in the Royal Air Force. In 1943, he sustained severe injuries that brought his military service to an end, and subsequently, gave him a renewed sense of focus on his artistic career. Kelly went on to build a reputation for depicting historic houses, receiving invitations to the great country homes of Britain and gaining prized commissions form their owners. In 1982, Kelly painted some murals at Castle Howard, funded by the proceeds from the television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited based on Evelyn Waugh's novel. Over the years, Kelly became renowned for his distinctive Neo-Romantic and Surrealist aesthetic, often incorporating paddle steamers, railways, red-and-white striped deckchairs, and hot air balloons into his compositions.

Note: In the present work, Kelly brings out the Surreal quality of the Orangery and its grounds, with its Classical figures making the work reminiscent of Giorgio di Chirico's metaphysical style. For Robert Harling, writing in the Arthur Tooth & Sons catalogue, these works evoke a 'heady excitement' and the 'quality which made the tales of Tolstoy, Turgeniev, Chekov so haunting and memorable to my youth'. initially influenced by the work of the Surrealists, Felix Kelly became celebrated for his book cover designs, particularly for ghost stories including Faber and Faber's Best Horror Stories (1957) and Best Tales of Terror (1962), as well as for Haunted Houses (1956) by Joseph Braddock. The artist held his first one-man exhibition at Lefevre Gallery in 1943, which was highly acclaimed and lead to Herbert Read buying a work and writing the introduction to his next catalogue.

Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, LA, Apr. 16 - May 14, 1972. Note: Born in New Zealand in 1914, Felix Runcie Kelly moved to London in 1935 and never returned to the place of his birth. In England, Kelly became a graphic artist at an advertising agency until the outbreak of World War II, when he enlisted in the Royal Air Force. Following the war, his artistic focus shifted to book and magazine illustration and painting. Kelly was heavily influenced by the Surrealists early in his painting career, and this impact can be seen in many of his works of the 1940s. Kelly regularly received commissions to paint portraits of grand houses and estates, and he often included small surrealist aspects to add an otherworldly appearance to the subjects. However, Kelly recognized that his commissions were more popular when depicting a home in a romantic and nostalgic manner rather than a surreal one, and he shifted his painting style to accommodate the preference of his patrons, wealthy homeowners from the United States and Great Britian. An exhibit at The R. W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1972 included the considerable canvas offered here and was entitled “Felix Kelly: A Romantic Realist,” further alluding to the romantic yet realistic style for which Kelly became most known. “3604 Spring Hill Avenue” of Mobile, Alabama is a masterwork of the artist’s southern scenes with a classic moss-draped oak, inviting lawn chairs and abundant foliage.

Castlehyde is a townland and estate located in County Cork, Ireland. The manor house, Castlehyde House, was built in about 1801 by the architect Hargrave of Cork, for John Hyde, MP. Douglas Hyde, founder of the Gaelic League and first Irish president, was a descendent of the family. It is now owned by the Irish musician and dancer Michael Flatley, who created Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger Live.

Felix Kelly, British/New Zealand 1914â1994 - Book illustration design; gouache on paper, signed lower right 'Felix Kelly', 25 x 17.2 cm (ARR) Note: Initially influenced by the work of the Surrealists, Felix Kelly became celebrated for his book cover designs, particularly for ghost stories including Faber and Faber's âBest Horror Storiesâ (1957) and âBest Tales of Terrorâ (1962), as well as for âHaunted Housesâ (1956) by Joseph Braddock. The present work appears to be a design for a haunted house story, although not for the Mezzotint, as claimed in the inscription on the back of the frame. The artist held his first one-man exhibition at Lefevre Gallery in 1943, which was highly acclaimed and lead to Herbert Read buying a work and writing the introduction to his next catalogue.
