        Oliver Kemp (American, 1887-1934). "Call to the Wild" print on canvas, ca. 1910. Signed in print at lower right. Title below image. A vibrant composition by American illustrator Oliver Kemp featuring two hunters in the wilderness near a river or lake. One hunter wields a rifle while the other blows a horn as a "Call to the Wild". Oliver Kemp studied in Europe under James McNeill Whistler and Jean Leon Gerome as well as in the United States under William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, and Howard Pyle. While Kemp called Michigan his home, he worked in New York creating covers for popular periodicals such as The Saturday Evening Post, Harper's, Scribner's, Collier's, and Century. This said, Kemp always traveled for artistic inspiration, making annual trips to the Rocky Mountains and also visiting tropical regions for further adventures.         Oliver Kemp (American, 1887-1934) Untitled (Fishing) Signed bottom right, oil on canvas (23 3/4 x 15 1/2 in. (60.3 x 39.4cm)) Provenance Waddington's Auctioneers, Toronto, Ontario, n.d. Private Collection, California. Condition report: The relined canvas is in very good overall condition. A vertical black line is present in upper left, perhaps an old scratch or stretcher crease. The very slightest areas of craquelure are occasionally present, for example along the female figure's back. Inpainting is present where the trees meet the sky, along with two 1/2" areas underneath the reflection of the boat. Occasional flecks of inpainting are also present at bottom center. See Specialist's phtoso for details. Frame: 30 1/4 x 22 1/4 x 1 1/2 in.

        inscribed "Kemp canoe cover return to M * Kemp p. 31041" on back This work served as a June 1909 cover of the "Saturday Evening Post," a copy of which accompanies this lot. A student of Howard Pyle (1853-1911) and William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), Kemp was an extremely popular illustrator. He worked out of both New York and Detroit, Michigan, but like many of his contemporaries, made yearly pilgrimages to the West, traveling extensively through the Rocky Mountains.
