Matthew Kendrick RHA (c. 1797-1874) A Yacht in Full Sail off Dalkey Island Oil on canvas, 38 x 61cm (15 x 24) Signed and dated 1862 Mathew Kendrick is one of the finest of the Irish marine artists of the Victorian period and was ‘known for his convincing seascapes and portrayal of vessels’ (Art and Architecture of Ireland, 2, 331). His skill in this regard, nicely evidenced in this view of Dublin Bay, was learned first hand as he had sailed on a fishing vessel in Newfoundland and he ‘was in demand to helm in Dublin yacht races’ (ibid.) and he availed of these sailing connections to promote his marine art. Having trained in the Dublin Society Schools from 1825, he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy for several decades from the 1820s to 1870s. In 1850 he was elected a member of the RHA and later served as its Keeper and was further honoured by being appointed the marine painter of the Royal Irish Yacht Club. Kendrick who knew the waters of Dublin Bay so well liked to include its familiar coastline in his paintings, from Howth to Dalkey. Contemporary critics attested to the sense that what made his work so authentic and powerful was that he was also a capable seaman who knew the vessels and atmospheric conditions he painted intimately. His View between Bullock and Sandycove, for example, was praised in 1863 as a ‘fine, bold production which a sailor would immediate perceive to be true’. The same can be said of the present work dating from the previous year which shows Dalkey Island with a yacht of the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

    Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Matthew Kendrick RHA (1805-1874) Yachts Racing off Dublin Bay with a Paddle Steamer in the Distance Oil on canvas, 46 x 86cm (18 x 33¾'') Signed Matthew Kendrick was born in Dublin, the son of a custom's officer. His father undoubtedly used his position to procure a place on a ship for the young Kendrick, and his formative years were spent working off the harsh Newfoundland Coast as a seaman. Returning to Ireland, he enrolled in The Dublin Society Schools, hardly surprisingly his work focused on the sea. His vast knowledge of the sea made him sought after as a professional crewman on the yachts raced in Dublin Bay, from the newly formed Kingstown yacht clubs - the Royal Irish and the Royal St. George. First exhibiting with the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1827 he continued to exhibit regularly until paralysis robbed him of the use of his arm in 1871. During his lifetime he became the official painter to the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire. The present work depicts large cutters rounding a mark, presumably in Dublin Bay, with onlookers on the deck of a paddle steamer. The two yachts in the lead are trailed by a third, who has yet to round the mark. The size and style of the yachts are similar to the 1st Marquis of Anglesey's yacht Pearl, a hundred tonne behemoth, that the Marquis brought over from England to race when he was the Lord Lieutenant, the Marquis being the first Commodore of the Royal Irish Yacht Club.
