      watercolor and gouache, signed "D. J. Kennedy / 1874," lower left, presented in 20th century gilt wooden frame. SS 7 x 11.75 in. Born in Scotland, Kennedy spent the bulk of his working life in and around Philadelphia. He is highly regarded for his 1876 scenes of the Centennial Exposition.

      Atlantic City signed D. J. Kennedy, dated 1876 and inscribed with title and Atlantic Avenue beach north of the Light House, l.l. - - signed again and inscribed To Mrs. S. M. Elliot/With compliments of/ Philadelphia Christmas 1882 on the backing attached to the reverse - - gouache on paper 9 x 18 3/8 in. (22.8 x 46.6 cm.) (sight) David Kennedy arrived in Philadelphia from Scotland in 1836. From that time until his death, he executed hundreds of drawings of Philadelphia and the environs. He portrayed more than historical sites and picturesque views, for he enjoyed depicting scenes of the routine which are today documents of 19th century life. Kennedy also painted coastal scenes such as this example and including Entrance to Harbor - - Moonlight in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both exhibit a knowledge of the marine paintings by Martin Johnson Heade and James Hamilton.
