Painter, Wood cutter, Lithographer, Illustrator, Wall painter, b. 1882 - d. 1971
Born in 1882, American artist Rockwell Kent is best known for his portrayal of landscapes and human figures. Kent began his formal art training at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art and went on to study at the Art Students League. Considered an early Modernist, Kent was also influenced by Transcendentalism, which can be seen through the mystic qualities found in Rockwell Kent's prints of landscapes. Rockwell Kent prints are valuable collectors' pieces today.
Kent worked in several different mediums including painting, lithography, and wood engraving. Inspired by the artist's love for travel, Rockwell Kent's lithographs for sale often depict people from a wide range of backgrounds and incorporate distinct geometrical shapes. During his lifetime, Rockwell Kent's wood cuttings were among his most popular work, and his original line of study, architecture, no doubt added to his precision as an engraver. Buyers can find rare woodcut prints for sale online by a variety of artists.

In the document the author upholds the United States Constitution and in his words "I abhor any act, or series of acts, or conspiracy to act, toward the overthrow by force and violence of our constitutional government." He goes on to denounce McCarthy and his HUAC in the strongest terms, "I believe the investigations into the political beliefs of American citizens and the political tenets of groups of American citizens to be in clear violation of provisions of the Bill of Rights...I am forced to the further conclusion that the conspiracy exists for the purpose of overthrowing our Democracy in favor of a Fascist, totalitarian government. I have no hesitation in charging that its Chairman, Senator McCarthy, is its leader. Moreover, and in view of the forces at the disposal of this Committee, I charge the conspiracy to be one to overthrow our form of goverrnment, if need be, by force. and violence...The cards are stacked. I will not play the game." Kent had sent this copy to his socialist comrades Alex and Martha Geckler who he had met in Winona, MN in 1913. Chapters 21-22 in Rockwell Kent's autobiography It's Me O Lord tells the story of Kent's work as superintendent of construction at Briarcombe Farm, a "gentleman's estate" for two industrialists in Winona during Kent's "full-packed Minnesota year". It was on the job that Rockwell Kent met German immigrant socialist Alex Geckler and his wife Martha. Chapter 22 relates how Kent and the Gecklers stood together in collective bargaining with their employers Bell and Prentiss. After winning the increase in pay for himself and his co-workers, Kent reflects "The victory that had resulted from the carpenter's show of solidarity having been followed by wage increases to other workers, a true fraternal spirit had come to prevail on the job. I, naturally, shared in this; and in commemoration of my impending departure all of us entered with enthusiasm into the planning of a great Sunday picnic to be held on Briarcombe Farm. The invitation, designed by me and handsomely printed on good stock, bore under the date of the affair my friend Alex Geckler's composition: Ihr die dieses Werk vollbracht Als Kamerad mit mir geschafft, Seid Sonntag alle meine Gaste; Ich lad' euch ein zum Abschiedsfeste" Translation: You who accomplished this work Managed as a comrade with me, Be my guests on Sunday; I invite you to the farewell party. An example of the 1913 invitation card, pictured on p. 269 of It's Me O Lord, is included in this lot. As the correspondence manifestly illustrates, this experience of solidarity solidified a friendship that would last for the rest of their lives.
