DER WEINHÄNDLER Öl auf Holz, verso zwei Verstrebungen. 58 x 36 cm. Links unten signiert „Kern H“. Verso ein rotes Wachssiegel. In Prunkrahmen. In einem einfachen Innenraum ein stehender älterer Mann mit Hut und umgebundener Schürze, freudig mit leichtem Lächeln die beiden glänzenden Weintraubenrispen in seiner linken Hand betrachtend, die er einem schräg gehaltenen Korb in seiner rechten Hand mit hellen, roten und blauen Weintraubenrispen entnommen hat. Hinter ihm ein großes Weinfass und eine brennende Kerze auf einem niedrigen Tisch. In der vorderen rechten Ecke ein weiterer Korb mit blauen Trauben und eine geöffnete Wassermelone. BIOGRAPHY: Hermann Kern, also known as Hermann Armin von Kern, was born in 1838 in the Hungarian Liptoujvar. In 1852 he took first drawing lessons in Prague. In the Mid-1850's he began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Carl Rahl. In 1867 he received a scholarship for the Academy in Dusseldorf and in 1870 he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied with Carl Theodor von Piloty. In the late 1880s, he finally settled in Vienna.
