              Harry Kernoff RHA (1900-1974) NUDE

              Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Harry Kernoff RHA (1900-1974) NUDE oil on board signed lower left; inscribed [for sale £1,000, 1979] on label on reverse h:27.50  w:31.50 in. As a student at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in the 1920s, Harry Kernoff would have spent a significant amount of time in the life room, drawing from the nude model under the tutelage of Seán Keating and Patrick Tuohy. Although best known today for his city and townscapes, and his depiction of Dublin most particularly, as a student Kernoff honed his skills as a draughtsman, producing a range of well-drawn and modelled sketches. A collection of these is now in the National Gallery of Ireland, part of the large archive of works on paper donated by the artist's sister, Lena Kernoff, following his death in December 1974. Among these drawings are several works of a seated or reclining female nude, which may have informed the present work. Although this painting does not seem to have been exhibited during the artist's lifetime, another work titled A Nude Reflection was shown in the New Irish Salon in 1925. In the archival material also donated by Lena are the artist's photographic records of his paintings, including two images of nudes. One is possibly A Nude Reflection, showing the model with a large oval mirror, and another which closely resembles the present work. It is undoubtedly the same model and pose, and a later inscription on the reverse notes that it was painted around 1925, in the 'School of Art' on Kildare Street. There are slight differences, including the addition of the book on the right-hand side, and the decorative patterning on the left, suggesting that Kernoff either altered the canvas after it was photographed, or made more than one version - a common feature of his practice. No. 78 Priced £50.0.0 'Harry Kernoff Exhibition' Godolphin Gallery, March 1974 Cat No. 2 under title 'Gantries On a Sunday, Belfast 1936' where thought to have been purchased and thence by descent to the current owner. Louis MacNeice’s 1937 poem Carrickfergus opens with the line ‘I was born in Belfast between the mountain and the gantries / To the hooting of lost sirens and the clang of trams’, capturing the sound and landscape of the city and its industry. Similarly, in this painting, Harry Kernoff finds a moment of leisure in Victoria Park under the looming cranes of the Harland and Woolfe shipyard, framed by the mauve Belfast Hills. To the left of the painting, the distinctive Arrol Gantry is visible, built in 1908 and a crucial component in the ability of the company to build large liners like the RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic. Against this imposing backdrop, the game of two boys – setting their small toy boat to sail across the lake – adds a charming touch to the scene. Born in London in January 1900, Harry Kernoff moved to Dublin with his family in 1914. While working as an apprentice cabinet maker with his father, the young artist attended classes at the Kevin Street Technical Schools, before moving to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. In 1923, Kernoff was awarded the Taylor Scholarship and his first solo exhibition was held in the rooms of the Society of Dublin Painters in 1927. Over the following decades, Kernoff dedicated his painting practice to the representation of daily life in Ireland’s towns and cities, chiefly in Dublin, but extending to Killarney, London, Paris, and Belfast. He was elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1935 and was a regular exhibitor there throughout his career. In 1936, Kernoff included Gantries from Victoria Park, Belfast among his submissions to the RHA Annual Exhibition: a catalogue price of £50 suggests that the work was a well-sized oil, perhaps the present work. There is a detailed preparatory sketch for this painting in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI. 7766.357). Part of the extensive collection donated by the artist’s sister, Lena Kernoff, after his death, the sketch is robust and meticulous in its depiction and annotation of the scene. Kernoff noted that he observed the ‘Gantry’s [sic] from Victoria Park, Belfast’ on the 11 July 1935. For the most part, the sketch aligns with the present oil, showing the latticed ironwork of the gantries, contrasting with the curve of the bridge and flowing water. A sauntering bird, however, has been replaced with a striding worker – a Belfast cousin of the artist’s characteristic Dublin dockers. Four sketches in this collection relate to this visit to Belfast, with the artist also capturing views of the Bellevue Steps at Belfast Zoo and two views from the top of Cave Hill. Paintings related to these sketches were exhibited at the Waddington Galleries in 1936, and at further Dublin exhibition in 1937. For artists interested in the urban landscape, Belfast’s harbour and shipping industry had long provided visual inspiration: ranging from early nineteenth-century vedute to William Conor’s evocative street scenes and depictions of the city’s workers. This painting, filled with the colour and character of Kernoff’s best urban paintings, is an important component of the artist’s oeuvre and a notable representation of the northern city. Provenance: Adam's, Dublin, 8th December 1999 lot 97A; Private Collection In this view of the Old Clock Tower in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Harry Kernoff captures a moment in the everyday life of a Canadian city. The artist's visit to Canada resulted from a chance encounter, when in 1957, in Baileys pub in Dublin, Kernoff met Albro Ettinger from Nova Scotia. Ettinger invited the artist to visit his home, to produce a series of drawings and paintings. A keen traveller, Kernoff quickly accepted the invitation, flying from Shannon, via Boston, to Halifax. This watercolour is one of several paintings that resulted from his trip. Others include The Parade and Citadel, Halifax, Fishing Men - West River, Nova Scotia, and also views of Newfoundland. Kernoff's Nova Scotia paintings were exhibited in 1958, at the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery in Dublin. Choosing as his vantage point a position on Brunswick Street, behind iron barriers, Kernoff surveys the people and traffic, capturing with accurate detail the check shirts and caps worn by Nova Scotians. Cars are parked on both sides of the street. A telegraph pole, with its many wires, provides a counterpoint to the Neo-classical grandeur of the Clock Tower. Commissioned by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and built in 1803, the Tower is still a feature of the Nova Scotia skyline. Most of Kernoff's paintings depict such everyday scenes, and he always introduced a vivacity, colour and cheerfulness to his depictions of people and places. Born into a Jewish family that had fled pogroms in Belarus for the safety of London, Harry Kernoff's father, Isaac Kernoff, was a cabinet maker. When Harry was fourteen years old, the family moved from Stepney to Dublin, where Isaac joined the cabinet-making firm of Louis Gurevich on Capel Street. While serving an apprenticeship with his father, Harry, along with his brother Hyman, attended evening classes at the Metropolitan School of Art. In 1923, a Taylor Scholarship enabled Kernoff to visit Paris, and also to become a full time student at the Metropolitan School, where his teachers included Seán Keating, Patrick Tuohy and Harry Clarke. In 1926, the first exhibition of Kernoff's work was held, at the Society of Dublin Painters, at 7 Stephen's Green. Over the following years he showed frequently with the Dublin Painters, and participated in group exhibitions, both in Ireland and abroad; his paintings being shown in London, Paris, Chicago and other cities. From 1926 onwards, for almost five decades, he exhibited annually at the RHA, and he also had two solo shows with the Victor Waddington Galleries. In addition to woodcut print editions, he also painted portraits, mainly of actors and writers, and contributed to publications such as James Stephens The Crock of Gold and the Broadsides of the Cuala Press. Provenance: Adam's, 29 March 2000, lot 23; Private collection Writing after Harry Kernoff's death in 1975, John Nolan hailed the artist as 'the artist of the workers', noting his lifelong 'identification with progressive, radical, working class ideas.' In his art, one of Kernoff's most manifest displays of sympathy with the political left came through his repeated depiction of Liberty Hall on Eden Quay, then a former hotel building rather than the modernist tower seen there today. The building had an illustrious history in the early twentieth century: in 1912, it was purchased by the Irish Transport and General Workers Union and the following year, it housed a soup kitchen during the Lockout. As the headquarters of the Irish Citizen Army, copies of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic were printed there and it suffered heavy shelling in 1916. Along with his repeated depiction of the building, Kernoff reinforced his belief in the site as a symbol by including it in his woodcut portrait of James Connolly, replaced in later printings by the plough and the stars. The earliest extant sketch by Kernoff of Liberty Hall is dated to 1928 (National Gallery of Ireland), although he first exhibited a version of the composition at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1927. It was not unusual for Kernoff to rework compositions in several media (including pen and ink, watercolour, oils, and woodcut) across a broad time span. In the present work, he characteristically depicts a cross-section of Dublin's working population, from labourers and dockers to aproned women and busy mothers. The building is bathed in light, with an open door and the shadows of people at work inside its walls: this is Liberty Hall a bastion of political enlightenment and community organization in the heart of Dublin city. Provenance: Phillips, London, 2 November 1999, lot 38; Private collection While perhaps best known for his depictions of Dublin's busy streets, the county's suburbs were also a frequent subject of Harry Kernoff's work. Spanning the bay from Bray and Sandycove to Portmarnock and Donabate, the artist was not immune to the lure of a seaside town, and the resulting coastal views are among some of his finest landscape scenes. Depictions of Howth, such as the present work, appeared in the artist's exhibitions from late 1920s. This colourful view of the popular tourist and day tripper spot was conceived of slightly later: the preparatory pencil sketch, now in the National Gallery of Ireland, is dated to 20 June 1937 with the inscription, 'View of Howth'. Filled with characteristic details such as courting couples, running children and a sign for 'Doyle's' tea shop' (along with a glimpse into its interior) Kernoff also masterfully captures the changing gradient of Howth hill, with a jigsaw of slopping roofs, steep paths, and the cliff face, spanning out to the beach beyond. A larger version of this scene in oils is extant, along with other views of Dublin Bay and Balscadden Bay which date to the same period, all capturing the area's natural beauty and charm. Born in London in January 1900, Kernoff moved to Dublin with his family in 1914. While working as an apprentice cabinet maker with his father, the young artist attended classes at the Kevin Street Technical Schools, before moving to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art.
