MEXIKO Öl auf Kupfer. 18 x 24,5 cm. Provenienz: Privatsammlung, Frankreich. Literatur: Eine Version ohne die links oben befindlichen Vögel in: Klaus Ertz und Christa Nitze-Ertz, Die Maler Jan van Kessel. Kritischer Katalog der Gemälde, Lingen 2012, S. 187, Kat.Nr. 119. (14801611) (13) Jan van Kessel the Elder, ca. 1626 – 1679, attributed/ follower of MEXICO Oil on copper. 18 x 24.5 cm. This painting is an intriguing example of the European fascination with the New World in the 17th century. Although van Kessel never travelled to America himself, he created this depiction based on accounts, sketches, and models provided by travellers, missionaries, and other artists who had visited the Spanish colonies. A good comparative example is the miniature from 1666, which is part of Jan van Kessel’s America ensemble, held at the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no. 1913, overall dimensions: 48.6 x 67.9 cm). Another comparable example of similar quality, though without the birds shown in the upper left, sold at Christie’s in New York for USD 68,500. A similar piece, in the form of bound miniature paintings, is also at the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. 1554). Provenance: Private collection, France. Literature: One version without the birds in the top left in: Klaus Ertz, Christa Nitze-Ertz, Die Maler Jan van Kessel, Lingen, 2012, p. 187, no. 119.

  • Attributed to JAN VAN KESSEL (Antwerp, 1626- 1679). "Concert of birds". Gouache on vellum.

Attributed to JAN VAN KESSEL (Antwerp, 1626- 1679). "Concert of birds". Gouache on vellum.

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Attributed to JAN VAN KESSEL (Antwerp, 1626- 1679). "Concert of birds". Gouache on vellum. Measurements: 18,5 x 23 cm; 54 x 59 cm (frame). This work represents a very diffused subject in the Flemish painting of the XVII century: the "concert of birds", in which different species are grouped around a musical score as if they participated in a choral scene. It is a common motif, with outstanding examples such as the one preserved in the Museo del Prado (catalog no. P001758) by Frans Snyders, who contributed decisively to its popularization. The theme, however, predates the Baroque fashion for courtly aviaries: it has its roots in the Middle Ages and has precedents in the representations of Aeolus surrounded by birds that proliferated at the end of the 16th century. Thematically, the scene combines the naturalistic with the allegorical. The birds, carefully depicted and arranged on trunks and branches, seem to participate in a universal harmony guided by music. This image can be interpreted as a metaphor for natural order and concord, but it is also linked to the Franciscan symbolic tradition, in which birds represent the praise of divine creation and the spiritual connection between nature and the sacred. The quality of the work can be appreciated in the meticulousness with which the different species are represented: each plumage, color and attitude is treated with almost scientific precision, characteristic of the Flemish school. The brushstroke is fine and detailed, especially in the textures of the feathers, while the coloring is lively and varied, creating a decorative and attractive effect. The composition, although apparently spontaneous, is carefully balanced, organizing the figures around the central axis of the score. The painting fully responds to the distinctive features of Flemish art, close to Van Kessel's painting: taste for detail, interest in nature, chromatic richness and a clear decorative vocation. These works were highly appreciated by collectors in Northern Europe and were frequently used to decorate specific spaces such as doors, shutters or fireplaces, before being exported to other countries, including Spain. In this painting, all these elements are harmoniously integrated: the scene not only delights for its technical virtuosity, but also conveys a symbolic and cultural message that connects medieval tradition, baroque sensibility and naturalistic observation. The result is a work that combines science, art and allegory in a refined and suggestive image.

  • Kessel, Jan van d.Ä.
    May. 13, 2026

    Kessel, Jan van d.Ä.

    Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Kessel, Jan van d.Ä. Antwerpen 1626 - 1679 29 x 23 cm A bouquet of flowers in a glass vase. C. 1650/1670. Oil/canvas, relined. Southern German private collection. Expert report by Dr. Klaus Ertz. In his floral still lifes, Kessel arranged a wide variety of flowers - often species that do not bloom at the same time in reality - into harmonious, almost scientific-looking compositions. In doing so, he combined artistic aesthetics with a keen interest in observing nature. The flowers appear fresh, colourful and vibrant, often complemented by insects such as butterflies or beetles, which further enliven the works. Typical of van Kessel’s works are the small format and the delicate, almost miniature-like style of painting. His still lifes are not only decorative but also reflect the Baroque interest in transience and the beauty of nature. At the same time, they reveal the influence of the natural history studies of his time, through which art and science are closely intertwined in his paintings. Kessel, Jan van d.Ä. Antwerpen 1626 - 1679 29 x 23 cm Blumenstrauß in Kugelglas. Um 1650/1670. Öl/Lwd., doubl. Süddeutsche Privatsammlung. Gutachten Dr. Klaus Ertz, 2021.

Seine Bilder wurden sehr geschätzt und waren in ganz Europa begehrt. oil on round panel "Nephew of Jean Brughel the Elder, in this small tondo, even if it is foreign to the genre he was used to, his pictorial traits and assiduous attention to detail are visible, significant is the small still life basket of fruit placed on the left which testifies to the great ability of the painter in representing the natural world. Even the butterflies that the children chase, trying to catch them, denote the painter's love for the minute attention to detail. Most of Kessel's paintings represent the details in an exact and sometimes almost scientific way, an example of finesse and exact execution." STUDIO ASOR

(Antwerp 1626–1679) A scene from Aesop’s Fables: The Peacock and the Magpie and the crowning of the Eagle, oil on canvas, 24 x 32 cm, framed Provenance: Imperial Russian Collections, Saint Petersburg (according to a brand mark of the State Hermitage Museum on the stretcher and inventory numbers on the back); sale, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 14 November 1990, lot 122 (as Jan van Kessel II); European art market; where acquired by the present owner Literature: K. Ertz, C. Nitze-Ertz, Die Maler Jan van Kessel, Lingen 2012, p. 205, no. 174 (as Jan van Kessel I, painted in the 1660s) A grandson of Jan Brueghel the Elder and nephew of Jan Brueghel the Younger, Jan van Kessel the Elder was one of the most acclaimed Flemish painters of his time. He specialised in small-scale pictures of subjects inspired by the natural world such as floral still lifes and allegorical series showing the four elements. He worked from nature and used illustrated scientific texts as sources for his paintings with objects represented with great accuracy. His works were highly prized by his contemporaries and were collected by wealthy merchants and nobles throughout Europe. The present composition shows the story of the peacock and the magpie and the crowning of the eagle taken from the Aesopian fable. They are represented here together with a variety of domestic and exotic birds, including the sultana bird and the macaw that van Kessel rendered in his distinctive style of painting.

MARIENDARSTELLUNG MIT BLUMENRAHMUNG Öl auf Holz. 64,2 x 43,9 cm. Literatur: Vgl. JAN VAN KESSEL (Antwerp, 1626-1679). "Flower garland with the Virgin". Oil on copper. Measures: 32 x 26 cm; 53.5 x 48.5 cm (frame). This work follows a very popular tradition in 17th century Baroque painting. Although, due to the importance of the flowers and the fruits, it is possible to speak of a still life, the religious scene they frame means that it should be considered as part of a line of paintings that is very common in both the Spanish and Flemish schools. The central theme was painted in grisaille, imitating sculpture, or in color, and although this used to be religious, it is not entirely exceptional to find mythological themes or even an element of still life; and he surrounded himself with a garland, sometimes run and sometimes divided, made in full color. Jan van Kessel "the Elder", was an active Flemish painter in Antwerp in the mid-17th century. Versatile artist who practiced in many genres, including insect studies, floral still lifes, Marines, river landscapes, heavenly landscapes, allegorical compositions, animal scenes, and genre scenes. An offspring of the Brueghel family, many of his themes were inspired by the work of his grandfather Jan Brueghel the Elder, as well as the previous generation of Flemish painters such as Daniel Seghers, Joris Hoefnagel and Frans Snyders. Jan van Kessel the Elder was born in Antwerp as the son of Hieronymus van Kessel the Younger and Paschasia Brueghel (the daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder). He was, therefore, Jan Brueghel, the grandson of the Elder, Pieter Bruegel, the great-grandson of the Elder and the nephew of Jan Brueghel the Younger. His direct ancestors in the line of the van Kessel family were his grandfather Hieronymus van Kessel the Elder and his father Hieronymus van Kessel the Younger, who were both painters. Very little is known about the work of these van Kessel ancestors. At the age of just 9, Jan van Kessel was sent to study with the history painter Simon de Vos. He also trained with family members who were artists. He was a student of his father and his uncle Jan Brueghel the Younger. In 1644 he became a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, where he was registered as a "blomschilder" (flower painter). He married Maria van Apshoven on June 11, 1646. The couple had 13 children, of whom two, Jan and Ferdinand, were trained by him and became successful painters. He was captain of a local schutterij (civil guard) in Antwerp. Jan van Kessel was financially successful as his works demanded high prices. He bought in 1656 a house called Witte in Roode Roos (White and Red Rose) in the center of Antwerp.

JAN VAN KESSEL (Antwerp, 1626- 1679). "Still life", ca. 1640. Oil on canvas. Relined. Attached report issued by Dr. Klaus Ertz. Signed J.V. Kessel F on the clay bowl at the center left. Measurements: 103 x 82 x 2.5 cm. We are in front of a variegated composition centered in a clearly delimited space, in which the illusionist taste of Jan Van Kessel stands out, who superimposes some fruits on others, together with some cacharos and even a parrot of showy plumage. The ceramics and glass elements show Van Kessel in his mature stage, taking into account that he could have created the present canvas around 1640. The grapes, artichokes, oysters, quinces and dates reflect the painter's chromatism, texture and mastery. The scene is bathed in a golden atmosphere typical of his painting. Jan van Kessel "the Old", was a Flemish painter active in Antwerp in the mid-seventeenth century. A versatile artist who practiced in many genres, including insect studies, floral still lifes, marines, river landscapes, paradise landscapes, allegorical compositions, animal scenes and genre scenes. A scion of the Brueghel family, many of his subjects were inspired by the work of his grandfather Jan Brueghel the Elder, as well as the previous generation of Flemish painters such as Daniel Seghers, Joris Hoefnagel and Frans Snyders. When his wife died in 1678, his fortunes seem to have worsened. In 1679 he had to mortgage his house. He was too ill to paint and died on April 17, 1679 in Antwerp. He trained other painters and also his own family members. His pupils included his sons Jan and Ferdinand.

Two black birds holding salamanders above a fire. Antwerp. C. 1660-1670. Oil on copper. Provenance: Paul Delaroff, St. Petersburg, 1914 Sotheby's, London, 7.7.1976, lot 32/1 London, Sotheby's, 8.7.1981, lot 238 Robert Pintelon, Old paintings, Aalst, 14.02.1998 Private collection, Heverlee Certificate and expert document: Robert Pintelon, 14.2.1998 Recorded in RKD images with number 42228. Klaus Ertz and Christa Nitze-Ertz mention three versions of this curious scene in their oeuvre catalogue.¹ The meaning of what is depicted is not entirely clear. Two black birds hold two fire salamanders over a fire with three turtle-doves to their right. In the background, mining furnaces are being fired by what appear to be Latin American natives. Although Ertz is unable to pinpoint this scene, he briefly categorizes the image as an allegorical representation of good and evil. In emblem literature, however, the salamander is mostly linked to fire. These emblems often hold captions indicating fortitude (against the flames), lust or envy when salamanders are depicted.² On the other hand, this small copper panel also seems to show some resemblance to the series of continents, including those of the Museo del Prado (P001554/001-4) and the Alte Pinakothek (inv. 1910-14) in Munich. In these large series holding many small size copper panels in one frame, Van Kessel illustrates the continents and their recognizable places/cities along allegorical representations with animals. One of the three versions of the present painting catalogued by Ertz, was also part of a larger series of twelve scenes with birds, fish and rodents mounted in one frame and sold at Christie's, London, 19.4.1996, lot 113 as circle of Jan van Kessel I.³ Description FR Deux autruches font griller des salamandres. Antwerpen. Ca. 1660-1670. 1910-14) in München.
