Kimbei worked as a colorist early in his career. Subjects include geisha, sumo wrestlers, a staged harakiri scene, Kabuki actors with weapons, street acrobats, vendors; pilgrims; "Palanquin on Snowing"; the morning prayer of a Buddhist priest; a funeral procession; a Shinto offering to a god; workers transplanting rice; workers in a tea plantation. Scenes around Nikko, Japan including the Great Gate, Chiusenji Lake, Sanjinko, Karamon Iyeyasu; Iyeyasu's Tomb; Ishidan stairs; the moveable light; carvings; pagoda; shrine for Matsuri; wooden image at Nitemon; rural roads; Owaki-Dani; a view of Mt. Fuji (Fujisan in Hakone); Westerners at Buddha Hakone statue; a man seated before Yumoto Waterfall; view of Yokohama; Goriki; interior of Hachiman at Kamakura. Photographs measure 10.25" x 8" inches. The album features a photograph of Mount Fuji, junks, scenes from temples in Nikko and Tokyo, and other landscapes, as well as occupational tableaux, including a doctor, an umbrella maker, a farmer, a Shinto priest, a basket vendor, figures drinking tea, samurai in armor, and traveling chairs.
