Per Kirkeby 1938-2018 Per Kirkeby was a Danish painter, sculptor and writer. In 1962 he entered the Eksperimenterende Kunst-skole (Experimental Art School) in Copenhagen. His first important one-man exhibition abroad was at the Museum Folkwang, Essen, in 1977. He later exhibited widely at public and commercial galleries throughout Europe and the USA. A prolific artist, Kirkeby used a range of different media. He was a member of the Fluxus group and was influenced by Pop art in the 1960s. Later he was influenced by Tachism and Abstract Expressionism. The vigorous brushwork and chromatic beauty of his, mostly untitled, paintings and the sensuous modelling of his rough black bronzes have earned him the title “lyric expressionist”. The paintings, which tend towards the abstract, bear veiled iconographic reference, largely to the Danish landscape and the female figure. In contrast to the poetic and dramatic character of his paintings and black bronzes Kirkeby’s brick sculptures display an unusual clarity. They make strong reference to traditional Danish housing and are inspired by Mayan architecture, as in the house-like, symmetrical form (1973) at Ikast, Denmark. In 1981 Kirkeby completed a group of such sculptures for the County Council building in Ålborg. His concern with experiment and conceptual art led him to execute a series of works in chalk on blackboard, and he regularly published poetry, essays and travel books, as well as making television and full-length documentary films. He also produced many artist’s books, such as the “picture novel” Landskaberne (“Landscapes”; Copenhagen, 1969). Comes with Passe-Partout

PER KIRKEBY (1938 Copenhagen 2018) Fram Herbst. 2005. Oil on canvas. Titled, monogrammed and dated on the reserve: Fram Herbst PK 05. 200 × 200 cm. Provenance: - Galerie Michael Werner, Cologne (verso with the label). - Galerie Vidal-Saint Phalle, Paris. - Purchased from the above by the present owner, since then private collection Switzerland. Exhibitions: - Berlin 2007, Per Kirkeby. Galerie Julius Werner Berlin, 9 February - 24 March. - Chicago 2007, Per Kirkeby. Chicago Arts Club, 26 April - 27 June. - Paris 2009, Per Kirkeby. Galerie Vidal, Saint Phalle, 6 December 2008 - 24 January 2009. The Danish artist Per Kirkeby was born in Copenhagen in 1938. Before devoting himself to art, he studied geology at the University of Copenhagen and received his doctorate on Arctic geology in 1964. In addition to his geology studies, in 1962 he began studying painting at the "Eskperimenterende Kunstskole". "In the end, landscape doesn't interest me one bit. I don't paint landscapes that exist out there. Nor do I paint what in a banal sense are called inner landscapes. I paint a picture, and the process of getting a picture going is in many ways reminiscent of the processes that have created the earth or landscapes over a very long period of time." Per Kirkeby. The present large-format work "Fram Herbst" from 2005 is typical of Kirkeby's landscape painting. Rather than focusing on an idyllic landscape or its depiction, he distances himself, and analyses the structure and space in order to reproduce these findings in an abstract representation of nature. The artist's knowledge of geology and nature always flows into his compositions; his motifs evoke rock formations, the earth's crust, sedimentary layers, erosion and volcanic strata. His unique painting style compels the viewer to use their imagination. He applies layer upon layer of paint, works it with the squeegee, omits sections, scratches and carves into the layer of paint, thus creating a dynamic surface. Complementing his outstanding, varied painting technique, is Per Kirkeby's mastery of colour. His colour palette is an exploration of nature and the seasons. Autumn, mentioned in the title, is found in the rich dark red and earthy rust red, lightened by a bright yellow-green and contrasted with a black-brown. With the aid of his vibrant colour palette, the dynamic surface and his unique motifs, Per Kirkeby’s stunning autumnal landscape emerges from an abstract painting before the viewer's eyes. --------------- PER KIRKEBY (1938 Kopenhagen 2018) Fram Herbst. 2005. Galerie Vidal, Saint Phalle, 6. Dezember 2008 - 24. Januar 2009. ---------------
