This work is part of the “Olympic Centennial Suite,” complete edition 110/250, which we auctioned on September 27, 2022, in 50 consecutive lots numbered 35245230 through 35245280. Measurements: 90 x 63 cm. A painter of precocious talent, Peter Klasen studied at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1956 to 1959, and in the early 1960s he settled in Paris, where he soon became one of the most recognized members of the New Figuration movement. He developed a personal artistic language, exploring and reinterpreting the symbols of our urban environment and popular culture. His work is currently represented in major international museums, as well as in prominent galleries in Germany, Italy, France, the United States, Spain, and other countries. This work is part of the "Olympic Centennial Suite," complete edition 110/250, which we auctioned on September 27, 2022, in 50 consecutive lots numbered 35245230 through 35245280.

A striking and visually charged composition emerges through a fusion of industrial symbolism and contemporary portraiture, reflecting the bold, graphic sensibility associated with Peter Klasen’s distinctive artistic language. The work presents a central, hyper-stylized female visage rendered in vivid monochromatic blue, her calm, direct gaze contrasting sharply with the surrounding mechanical and symbolic elements. Encasing the portrait, a structured arrangement of geometric forms and industrial motifs unfolds across a field divided into deep blue and rich crimson. Above, a radial mechanical device with protruding forms suggests machinery or engineered precision, while directional arrows, stenciled numerals, and graphic markings evoke themes of control, movement, and coded systems. The inclusion of a stark flame icon introduces a subtle tension, juxtaposing order with implied volatility. The Olympic Suite is composed of 50 lithographs and serigraphs chosen to represent various contemporary artistic trends. It was published to commemorate the first centenary of modern Olympism. The chosen artists work in very diverse movements and styles, from the hyperrealism of Antonio López to the abstraction of Sol Lewitt, passing through abstract expressionism, the geometrism of Arden Quin, conceptual art, pop art, the new realism of Baldaccini and Rotella, or the new fauvism of Dokoupil, among others. PETER KLASEN (1935) A 33, 2013 Technique mixte et collage sur papier gaufré vélin rigide en aqua gravure, signée en bas à droite, contresignée au dos, numérotée sur 20 exemplaires tous différents. Edition Aquastamps Paris, avec cachet. Dimensions : 51 x 63 cm - Important peintre, sculpteur et photographe allemand né à Lübeck, Peter Klasen commence l'apprentissage des techniques de lithographie et de l'aérographe et entre à la Haute école des arts de Berlin qui est alors l’école d’avant-garde dans l’esprit du Bauhaus ou de l’expressionnisme allemand. C'est en 1959 qu'il arrive à Paris et y installe un atelier rue de Clignancourt. Dès 1962, il est l'un des fondateurs de la nouvelle figuration qui prend également le nom de figuration narrative, composant essentiellement des tableaux mêlant la représentation d'objets industriels à des détails du corps féminin. S'y retrouve notamment Valerio Adami, Erró, Jacques Monory, Bernard Rancillac et Hervé Télémaque. En 1985, Klasen emmènagera dans une usine désaffectée de Vincennes transformée en habitation-atelier.
