According to the owners, the painting had a larger format, was damaged in the Second World War and cropped on the left and top edge and remounted on a stretcher. The original format (65 x 50 cm) can be found in Paul Graupe's auction catalogue. Framed.,

Signed lower left: Leo Klein v Diepold (charcoal pencil). Theodor Stoperan held the management of the Kunstsalon Paul Cassirer since 1910, from 1921 he was manager of the Alfred Flechtheim gallery, and in 1928 the gallery Zickel Theodor Stoperan & Co. was founded. It is possible that Klein von Diepold portrayed Stoperan at the same time as Max Slevogt and Max Liebermann, of whom similar portraits dating from 1923 exist.,

There are tiny spots and slightly browned parts within the bright areas of the paintings. The stretcher measures 80 x 65 cm and the frame 96 x 81 cm. Leo Klein von Diepold (1865-1944) Born in Dortmund, Leo Klein of Diepold grew up in an artistically talented family. His father, a history and portrait painter, determined the path, which two of his siblings, Julian and Maximilian, also followed as a painter. Leo studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, as well as at the Academy in Antwerp. He was the temporarily active in Paris and Berlin and established himself in the Dutch city of Noordwijk aan Zee, where he lived between 1907 and 1921. Since 1901, Leo was represented at numerous important art exhibitions, including the Berlin Secession. The painting is in good condition. It was restored on the edge lower right with a small patch. On the front the indentations of the stretcher are visible. Under UV light the varnished surface shows only minimal touch-ups. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The canvas size is 50.5 x 40.5 cm.       Nordfriesisches Haus Öl auf Holzplatte. 35 x 49 cm. Unten links mit Pinsel in Dunkelbraun signiert "Leo Klein-Diepold". Leo Klein von Diepold, der Bruder der Maler Julian und Maximilian Klein von Diepold, war Landschaftsmaler und Graphiker. Er studierte an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf und an der Akademie in Antwerpen, lebte in Paris und Berlin und 1907-1921 im niederländischen Noordwijk aan Zee. Seit 1901 nahm er an Ausstellungen u.a. der Berliner Secession teil. Das vorliegende Ölbild zeigt ein nordfriesisches Haus mit einer Bäuerin in sehr schöner, warmer Farbigkeit. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
