Guss nach 1945 - im Jahr ihrer Entstehung konnte die Aktstatuette ebenso wie die 1941 vollendete "Jugend" wegen der geltenden Materialrestriktionen während des II. Weltkriegs zunächst nur in Zink gegossen werden. Die weibliche Aktfigur verbindet eine entspannte, in ihr selbst ruhende Form mit graziler Körperlichkeit des schlanken Körpers. Klimsch gelingt es hierbei höchst subtil ein leicht gegenläufiges Bewegungsspiel der oberen und unteren Gliedmaßen in eine Erhabenheit von harmonischer Balance zu verwandeln. Hermann Braun schreibt hierzu 1991 in seinem Werkverzeichnis (S. 401-02): "Die Oberfläche ist ganz durchgeschliffen; auffällig die Reduzierung des plastischen Volumens zugunsten einer Abstraktion: Die Rundungen entstehen durch Addition von flächig gehaltenen Bahnen (...) Die sanfte Drehung des schlanken Körpers läßt reizvoll aufblühende Konturen erscheinen. Wie so oft geben die erhobenen Arme mit den übergreifenden Händen ein kosmisches Gefühl der Geschlossenheit und des Schutzes" (Hermann Braun. Fritz Klimsch. Eine Dokumentation. Köln 1991, S. 401/402). In einem Brief vom 1. September 1941 berichtet Klimsch zu der Bronze: "Die Arbeit geht erfolgreich weiter. - Außer dem 'Sieger' entsteht eine neue Kleinplastik (...) 'Adagio' kann man sie nennen", der mit Klimsch befreundete Nobelpreisträger Otto Warburg kommentierte, als er sie sah: "sie ist voller Musik - also muss es ja stimmen". 1942 betitelt Klimsch die Statuette auch als "Melodie". The sculpture presents a female figure in a recollected position, kneeling, with her arms crossed and an introspective expression. The surface has a soft patina that accentuates the rounded forms and subtle anatomy, seeking a harmonious and classical beauty. Executed around 1948, this work belongs to his mature stage, where Klimsch moved away from large public commissions to focus on more intimate and universal themes. Belonging to a lineage of artists, Fritz Klimsch studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, where he was a student of Fritz Schaper. In 1898 he was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession. He had the opportunity to become personally acquainted with Rodin's work, which impressed him with its expressiveness and vivacity. Along with Rodin, his other great reference was Adolf von Hildebrand, who, in contrast to the French sculptor, represented balance and serenity. Both sculptors, together with his trips to Italy and Greece, explain his style and evolution: he began making Art Nouveau sculptures, to gradually refine his style towards classicism, especially after 1933. This caused the National Socialism to appropriate his style, which they considered as a great artist, and included him in their Gottbegnadeten-Liste; in fact, he participated in the Great Exhibition of "German Art" organized by them, and received in 1940 the Goethe Medal in recognition of his art.

Signed 'F. KLIMSCH' on left sole of foot, foundry mark "H.NOACK BERLIN FRIEDENAU" on buttocks. With expert report from Hermann Braun dated 23 November 1998. From 1892 and 1901, when Fritz Klimsch created his first female sculptures featuring the Art Nouveau dancers Valentine Petit and Carolina Otero, female likenesses and nude sculptures became the thematic focal points of his oeuvre. These figures, which were popular among Klimsch’s patrons, also include “Erwachende”, which was completed in 1922/1923: it is an important piece within his oeuvre and represents an exceptional sculpture by the artist insofar as only three documented casts of it exist. With one leg crossed back and the other partially stretched out, the sculptor has created a seated nude figure whose slender-waisted torso is turned far to the right. While her right arm supports her head, she has stretched her bent left arm upwards. In order to suggest the fatigue of the “Erwachende”, Klimsch has interpreted her eyes as closed. As is characteristic of Klimsch’s work, she is engaged in a highly elegant motion. The model was Gabriella Schwalbach (1900-1969): born in Bucharest, Klimsch had met her in Freiburg in 1919, and she provided his most important source of inspiration for around seven years. The portrait bust of the young woman completed in 1921 (Braun 112) also attests to the good relationship between the sculptor and the young woman. According to Hermann Braun this piece, a high-quality cast poured during the artist’s lifetime, was probably formerly owned by Gabriella Schwalbach.

Die beiden Tänzerinnen stehen Rücken an Rücken, lediglich ihre Standbeine, das Gesäß sowie jeweils die rechte Körperseite berühren sich. Dennoch wirken die ineinander verschlungenen Körper aus der Betrachtung heraus fast wie eine Einheit. Ihre Arme sind im Tanz nach oben zum Kopf geführt und formen gemeinsam eine geschlossene, fließende Linie. So entsteht eine besonders harmonische und reizvolle Komposition. Fritz Klimsch thematisierte, wie viele seiner Bildhauerkollegen, speziell Georg Kolbe und Edgar Degas, den tanzenden Menschen häufig in seinem Werk. Die vorliegende, große Bronze "In Wind und Sonne" zählt zu den anmutigsten Aktstatuen des Bildhauers und wurde auch von Klimsch selbst rückblickend 1948 als "eine meiner schönsten Figuren" beschrieben. Bei der jungen Frau mit ihrer noch ganz jugendlichen Gestalt von fester Körperlichkeit gelang es Klimsch die Figur vom starr Statuarischen zu befreien. In ihrer ganzen Natürlichkeit gibt sie sich frei und ungezwungen dem Erleben von Wind und Sonne hin. Hermann Braun pries sie in seinem Werkverzeichnis von 1991: "In kaum einem anderen Werk der dreißiger Jahre sind die sich abstoßenden Pole 'Ruhe' und 'Bewegung' so kunstvoll und überzeugend miteinander verbunden worden. Das nur angedeutete Schrittmotiv ist - bevor es wirksam wird - in ein Standmotiv umgedeutet; die Bewegung ist ganz in die Körperdrehung (...) verlagert. Der angewinkelte linke, in die Hüfte gestemmte Arm stützt diesen Ablauf (...). Dieser Mädchentyp ist gewiss nicht 'nordisch'; eigenartig das Antlitz: Es erscheint lieblich in der Seitenansicht, herb von vorn." (zit. nach: Braun, S. 382). Für die Plastiken Klimschs, besonders die der 1930er Jahre, sind ästhetisch ausgewogene Proportionen immanent. Zugleich entsprach er hiermit, ob bewusst oder unbewusst, auch den Vollkommenheits-, Weiblichkeits- und Schönheitsidealen seiner Zeit. 1936 beteiligte sich Klimsch mit "In Wind und Sonne" am Kunstwettbewerb der Olympischen Spiele 1936 in Berlin, 1937 wurde die Aktstatue auch auf der Weltausstellung in Paris gezeigt. Die Gießerei Noack führte seit 1936 mehrere Güsse aus, die sich heute in Privatsammlungen und in öffentlichem Besitz befinden. Eine davon steht seit 1975 im Botanischen Garten in Berlin, sie stammt vermutlich aus Staatsbesitz, möglicherweise wurde sie von Klimsch 1943 selbst in die Auslagerung übergeben oder war 1936 einst im Garten des Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda von Joseph Goebbels. Klimsch gilt neben Georg Kolbe als einer der bedeutendsten, figürlich arbeitenden, deutschen Bildhauer in der 1. Hälfte des 20. Jhs., der sich vor allem weiblichen Akten widmete. Reisen nach Italien und Griechenland prägten seinen Stil ebenso wie Auguste Rodin, Adolf von Hildebrand und Aristide Maillol. Mit Max Liebermann und Walter Leistikow gründete Klimsch 1898 die Berliner Sezession, auf deren Ausstellungen er regelmäßig vertreten war. 1921-1935 lehrte er als Professor an den Vereinigten Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst in Berlin. Seine Erfolge während der Weimarer Republik konnte er auch im "Dritten Reich" fortsetzen, 1937-1944 war er regelmäßig auf der Großen Deutschen Kunstausstellung in München vertreten. H. 148 cm. Belonging to a lineage of artists, Fritz Klimsch studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, where he was a student of Fritz Schaper. In 1898 he was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession. He had the opportunity to become personally acquainted with Rodin's work, which impressed him with its expressiveness and vivacity. Along with Rodin, his other great reference was Adolf von Hildebrand, who, in contrast to the French sculptor, represented balance and serenity. Both sculptors, together with his trips to Italy and Greece, explain his style and evolution: he began making Art Nouveau sculptures, to refine his style towards classicism, especially after 1933. This caused the Nazis to appropriate his style, which they considered a brilliant artist, and included him in their Gottbegnadeten-Liste; in fact, he participated in the Great Exhibition of "German Art" organized by them, and received in 1940 the Goethe Medal in recognition of his art.

Fritz Klimsch’s bronze sculpture “Mädchen mit Tuch” was created in connection with his commission to produce five life-size marble sculptures for the stairway of the Prinz-Friedrich-Karl Palais built in Berlin based on plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. While the original figures have been lost since the end of the war, the plaster models have been preserved, and there is also a unique bronze cast of “Mädchen mit Tuch”. This piece is accordingly of special significance. This classical-looking sculpture belongs to Klimsch’s late bronze figures and occupies a place among his series of mostly standing, young female nudes, which also includes “Frühling” (1932), “Eva” (1933) and “Wind und Sonne” (1936). In terms of its motif, the “Mädchen mit Tuch” can be traced back to the 1913 bronze work of the same name (Braun no. 79). While the pose of the early marble version indicates that it is still entirely indebted to art nouveau, the bronze version is considerably more reserved in its movements, more cohesive and cooler in expression as a result of its intended presentation in the Schinkel palace. In this sense it reveals Klimsch’s deepened engagement with Greek sculpture, which he admired during his 1909 journey to Greece. What interested him in this context was less a particular style or specific technique than the expression of a “Greek spirit”: “All my life, the Hellenic sculptors have been a role model for me, and I have worked in the spirit of their great art” (cited in Gerd Brüne, Fritz Klimsch – Aufstieg und Niedergang eines deutschen Bildhauers im 20. Jahrhundert, in: exh. cat. Museum Giersch, Frankfurt am Main 2010, p. 157). Klimsch was thus able to continue a tradition without slavishly imitating it.

NOACK BERLIN". “Frühling” belongs to a group of female nudes in which Klimsch symbolically thematises the relationship between humankind and nature. These include bronzes such as “Frühlingsahnen”, 1923 (Braun 116), “In der Sonne”, 1925/26 (Braun 126), “Sturm”, 1932 (Braun 159) and “In Wind und Sonne”, 1936 (Braun 176). Klimsch personally considered “Frühling” to be particularly characteristic of his work. The young woman depicted here stretches her arms upward, as if she were awakening, with the palms of her hands and the right half of her face turned towards the sun. Her very slender, youthful body thus acts like a symbol of nature’s growth and becoming in the springtime. Depicted in a graceful but nonetheless natural attitude, she seems to be not posing for the sculptor but to be entirely present within herself. This particular copy is especially charming due to the patina deriving from its placement outdoors, which renders the bronze’s direct connection with the elements of nature – sun, rain and wind – strikingly apparent.

With this“Badende” from 1919, a rare early bronze by the Berlin-based sculptor Fritz Klimsch is coming up for auction. Just one year later, this piece could be admired among the other major works created by the artist up to that time at a special exhibition celebrating his 50th birthday: the “Sonderausstellung Fritz Klimsch” at the Free Secession in Berlin. The bronze figure “Badende” was presumably created immediately after the somewhat larger version of this theme in Untersberg marble (Lempertz, Auct. 979, Lot 259). Regarding the typology of the figure, Hermann Braun writes that Klimsch was aware of the version in stone’s minor shortcomings and created a sleeker, lighter and thus optimised cast version. While the contours of the figure have been reproduced, the limbs are now inscribed within a vertical rectangle. The arms are brought to the shoulders and left foot with a sure sense of equilibrium and balance while the legs are conceived as either bent or kneeling. The face, whose regular features are modelled after the diplomat’s daughter Mathilde von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen, is to be seen as a classical profile. In contrast to the stone version, the openings framed by the raised left arm and left leg provide transparency and dynamism. Although the sculpture has been completed to be viewed from all sides, it seems possible to identify a preferred and primary viewpoint: from here, an ornamentally flowing element underlying the design reveals itself. The only thing that still points to the original motif are the remnants of the bathing towel, which Klimsch has symbolically retained in his bronze’s hands.

In sich versunken sitzt die Träumende am Boden, die anmutige Haltung entspannt, die Arme um das angezogene rechte Bein geschlungen. Die bewegte Oberflächengestaltung der Kopfpartie und der Haare erzeugen eine besondere Lebendigkeit des Ausdrucks. Bereits 1935 schuf Klimsch eine große Version der "Träumenden". Sein bedeutendes Vorbild und Freund war Auguste Rodin, dessen Lebensnähe Klimsch eine nüchterne Statik und ausgewogene Tektonik entgegensetzte. So erzielte er die charakteristische Ausgewogenheit, die sein Werk kennzeichnet. Mit den befreundeten Künstlern Walter Leistikow und Max Liebermann gründete Fritz Klimsch die Berliner Sezession. 1912 wurde er Mitglied der Preußischen Akademie der Künste.
