Gustav Klimt Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Porträtmaler, Genre Painter, Landscape painter, b. 1862 - d. 1918

Born in 1862 to a life of poverty, renowned Viennese artist Gustav Klimt showed his talent for art at an early age, passing the entrance exam to the Viennese School of Arts and Crafts with distinction. Gustav Klimt's artwork often features gold symbolism, perhaps reminiscent of his father who was a gold engraver. His pieces are often erotic in nature, and although regarded as controversial at the time, is today considered to be influential. He was one of the most well-known members of the Vienna Secession movement.

In 1888, artist Gustav Klimt received the Austrian Golden Order of Merit for his contributions to art, and he was honored with special membership to the Universities Vienna and Munich. Klimt's art for sale continues to thrill and inspire viewers, showcasing his story and his own unique perspective with his signature style and emotive intensity. Purchase Art Nouveau paintings and prints online to grace your home with the distinctive beauty of this style.

    Est: $20,000 - $40,000

A beautiful example of this exceptionally rare poster.  Printed by the "Lithographische Kunstanstalt Albert Berger," Vienna.  “This poster is unprecedented in its composition. It caused a sensation, and not only on account of the empty space which fills the centre of the picture... It also demonstrated to the public the awakening of the ‘Sacred Spring’ (ver sacrum) of Viennese art. In the upper part of the picture is depicted the battle between Theseus and the Minotaur, watched by Athena, the faithful helper of brave warriors, goddesses of wisdom, and patroness of the arts. Of course, the picture—Theseus is just drawing back to deliver the death blow—was intended to symbolize the battle between the Künstlerhaus and the Secession” (Kossatz, p. 29). This is the censored version of the poster; to soothe the moral outrage of the Vienna police, trees were added at the top of the image as camouflage for Theseus’ naked body. Matted and framed under glass.  Provenance: From the Prominent Art & Design Collection of James (Jim) and Rose Ryan, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Dimensions: H 37" W 27" Frame Size: H 52" W 42" Literature: Nebehay, p. 1 (var); Kossatz, 12; Art in Vienna, 19; Encyclopédie/Weill, p. 322; Modern Poster, 41; Denscher, p. 23; Weill, 188; Timeless Images, 71 (var); Takashimaya, 57 (var); PAI-XX, 480

P. 317 Zustand / Condition Blatt minim gewellt und gebräunt, Ränder und Ecken teilweise etwas knittrig, unten rechts leichte Knickfalte, rückseitig mit Montierungsresten. In sehr guter Erhaltung Sheet slightly undulating and browned, margins and corners somewhat creased, lower right with a slight fold, traces of old mounting on the reverse. In the depiction of lovers, classical works avoid showing the immediate act of lovemaking. Instead, the symbolism of the kiss is often used as a hint of romance. Klimt's monumental and significant painting "Der Kuss" (circa 1908) is one of the best-known examples of this theme and a major work of Viennese Jugendstil. The title "Liebespaar" was originally also intended for the painting "Der Kuss". In the present drawing, created about seven years after the large-format painting "Der Kuss", Klimt shows a man and a woman in intimate togetherness. The staging is erotically charged and focuses on the sexual union of the couple. As was typical for the artist, he created numerous studies for each motif. His drawings show couples in different postures and from various perspectives. The linework in our sheet is characteristically minimalist for Klimt, yet expressive, with a compositional emphasis on the couple's intimacy and body language. The drawing may reveal an intimate glimpse of the artist himself—as a human being, as a lover, and as part of a tender moment. Earlier works show that Klimt occasionally depicted himself with his companion Emilie Flöge (1874–1952), which lends his work an additional personal dimension. Similar pictorial compositions can be found in studies of lovers for "Die Erfüllung" in the Stoclet Frieze. The Palais Stoclet in Brussels was designed and built from 1904 by the Viennese architect Josef Hoffmann for the Belgian industrialist Adolphe Stoclet. The artistic design was entrusted to the Wiener Werkstätte, which was to create the building as a total work of art in the spirit of the Vienna Secession. The task of designing the frieze in the dining room of the Palais fell to Hoffmann's close friend Gustav Klimt. Klimt's designs were finally executed from 1909 onwards by specialists in mosaic, ceramics, and enamel as well as by goldsmiths. The frieze is considered the artistic centerpiece of the Palais Stoclet, whose numerous designs are now housed in the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts. In sehr guter Erhaltung Sheet slightly undulating with light grip marks, upper left corner and lower right edge with light creases, traces of mounting on the reverse. The present nude drawing, created around 1907, of a young woman sitting confidently with full, long hair that appears to be tied back in a ponytail, is an impressive example of Gustav Klimt's intimate and sensual view of the female body. With red and blue colored pencils, the artist sketches the face, hair, and female body in a restrained palette with fine linework. Klimt's nude drawings were often considered provocative in his time. Today, his nude images are regarded in art history as pioneering for the modern depiction of body and sexuality. Our sheet exemplifies the artist's talent for uniting the erotic with the aesthetic—subtly, with poetry, and at the same time with great expressive power. The drawing is part of Klimt's extensive drawn oeuvre, in which the artist recorded female nudes and semi-nudes in various poses. It testifies to his great interest in the individuality of his models and is an exceptional example of his sensitive and erotically charged draftsmanship. At the same time, it is an important work from the golden age of Viennese Jugendstil drawing. In sehr guter Erhaltung Sheet slightly undulating and with minimal grip marks, lower right corner with a slight crease, slightly rubbed in the centre of the lower edge, traces of old mounting on the reverse. The present nude drawing of a young woman with a bent right leg from 1904 is a wonderful example of Gustav Klimt's masterful linework and his sensitive depictions of female sexuality. With a fine pen, the artist sketches the depiction of a female body full of self-assured sensuality, but also vulnerability, with precision, verve, and rhythm. With closed eyes and a relaxed facial expression, the woman appears to float in an empty space. In a half-revealed pose, she engages with her body in the most intimate way. Klimt's nude drawings were often considered provocative in his time. Today, his nude images are regarded in art history as pioneering for the modern depiction of body and sexuality. Our sheet exemplifies the artist's ability to unite the erotic with the aesthetic—subtly, with poetry, and at the same time with great expressive power. The work is part of Klimt's extensive drawn oeuvre, in which the artist recorded numerous variations of female nudes. As was typical for Klimt, preparatory studies formed the starting point for the composition of paintings—including the present sheet. It is a study for the painting "Wasserschlangen II". The sheet is a prime example of Klimt's sensitive and erotically charged draftsmanship and at the same time represents an outstanding work from the golden age of Viennese Jugendstil drawing. Wooden Serving Tray Adorned with Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss." Can hold a regular sized dinner plate.  Condition: Minor chips and marks throughout.  Size: 18 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 3 in.  Gustav Klimt (July 14th, 1862 - February 6th, 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d’art. Klimt’s primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods. Early in his career, he was a successful painter of architectural decorations in a conventional manner. As he began to develop a more personal style, his work was the subject of controversy that culminated when the paintings he completed around 1900 for the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna were criticized as pornographic. He subsequently accepted no more public commissions, but achieved a new success with the paintings of his “golden phase,” many of which include gold leaf. Klimt’s work was an important influence on his younger peer Egon Schiele. Fathering at least fourteen children and considered tremendously progressive in his approach to sexuality, race, and politics, his legacy was cut short due to pneumonia he contracted during the worldwide influenza epidemic that killed roughly 50 million people.

Gustav Klimt Framed “Danaë" Nude Print

    Est: -

In good condition with wear commensurate with age. Measured approximately 19W x 18H Klimt was born near Vienna into relative poverty. His father was a goldsmith and engraver, which heavily influenced his later obsession with metallic textures. At 14, he attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. His exceptional talent in classical, academic realism quickly earned him prestigious public commissions. Alongside his brother Ernst and friend Franz Matsch, Klimt painted stunning ceiling murals for major landmarks like Vienna's Burgtheater. Framed print of Gustav Klimt’s “Danaë,” featuring the reclining nude figure rendered in the artist’s distinctive decorative style. The composition combines flowing lines, rich patterning, and warm tonal contrasts to create an intimate, visually striking image. Ornamental details and curved forms reflect Klimt’s recognizable Art Nouveau influence. A decorative figural print suitable for RH50699

    Gustav Klimt: Standing Female Nude

    Est: €10,000 - €20,000

KLIMT, GUSTAV 1862 Baumgarten–1918 Vienna Title: Standing Female Nude. Subtitle: Preliminary study of the dancer on the left side of the ceiling painting "the dancer" at the Municipal Theater in Karslbad. Date: Ca. 1885. Technique: Pencil, heightened white on paper. Mounting: Mounted in mat. Measurement: 45 x 31.5cm. Notation: lower right: Nachlaß meines Bruders / Hermine Klimt. Frame: Framed. This previously unknown nude drawing of a standing woman can be identified as a study for the central figure in the painting *Dance*, which Gustav Klimt created in 1885/86 as part of the painted ceiling decoration in the Municipal Theatre in Karlsbad (now in the Czech Republic). It depicts the female figure dancing in the foreground on the left, who stands out particularly due to her floating elegance and her airy, light-coloured dress, together with the little girl she is holding by the hand. The fact that this figure – for which Alice Strobl had already published a costume study in her catalogue raisonné (Strobl I, no. 133) – can now be linked to a nude drawing for the first time is significant in several respects. Firstly, this work can be counted among the earliest studies that the artist, aged around 23, drew directly from a female model. During the life drawing classes of his training at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, which he completed in 1883, he had drawn almost exclusively from male models; female nudity was studied exclusively from photographs or reproductions. Secondly, this drawing is an early example of Klimt’s method of thoroughly exploring the character and movements of his costumed figures through the study of nude models. In this drawing, the nude on the left leans on a faintly suggested armchair, and on the right on an invisible object. This was the only way the model could maintain her balance whilst Klimt was drawing her. Of particular importance to him was the sense of suspension in the dance movement, which he captures vividly through the position of the legs and the slight twists of the body. Klimt’s studies for the ceiling paintings in Karlsbad, drawn in 1885/86, immediately precede the drawings created in 1886/87 for the paintings in Vienna’s Burgtheater, which mark the high point of his historicist career. Characteristic of the drawing presented here are the finely nuanced, precise contour lines and the subtle areas highlighted in white. The linear precision with which Klimt captures the female anatomy is combined with a touch of sensuality – an early indication of his later reputation as a painter and draughtsman of women. The theme of dance was to occupy him time and again in compositions such as the ‘Dancer’ in the Stoclet Frieze (1910/11) or in the painting ‘The Dancer’ (1916/17), finding its particular expression in his drawings..
