Julius Klinger 1876-1942 Zoologischer Garten. 1910. Condition A / A-: minor abrasions and restoration at edges. Framed. For this poster, Klinger veers from his trademark caricature style of illustration, but rather shows his abilities as an excellent, classical draughtsman - reminiscent of Hohlwein. A bright, detailed, pink flamingo fills up most of the image, looming large over a precise architectural rendering of the buildings of the zoo (still in existence today); the typography is neatly arrayed across the bottom of the poster. Klinger also designed a poster for the aquarium of the Berlin Zoo. Klinger p. 56 no. 70, DFP-III 1705.

Born on May 22, 1876, in Vienna-Dornbach, he trained at the Benedikt lithographic institute, briefly studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, moved to Munich and Berlin in 1897 (working for the magazines "Lustige Blätter" and "Meggendorfer Blätter"), taught at the Reimann School from 1911 to 1914, co-founded the Association of Artistic Window Dressers and was a member of the German Werkbund in 1912, returned to Vienna in 1915 (war posters, studio on Schellinggasse with courses), and published "Poster Art in Vienna" in 1923 and "Das Chaos der Künste" in 1924. A victim of the Holocaust, deported and murdered in 1942. Klinger revolutionized the poster with functional, geometrically clear designs (e.g., Manoli cigarettes, Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Johannisthal Air Day, Ankerbrot), objectivity instead of decoration, influenced by Kolo Moser and Adolf Loos; book illustrations, trademarks, typography with a radical reduction to line, surface, and symbolism. Klinger studied art in Vienna, and worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine Lustige Blätter. He was a prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, recognized as one of the best German poster artists and illustrators working in pre-War Berlin. He was also an accomplished typographer, whose style ranged from flat tones and strong outlining (popular in Germany at the time), to strictly typographic pieces, bold and daring graphic constructions and humorous caricatures. Künstlerplakate Hollerbaum & Schmidt. Plakat in zwei Teilen. Farblithographie auf Affichenpapier. 149 x 99 cm (158,5 x 107,3 cm, zusammengesetzt). Um 1900. Esprit und Eleganz strahlt die radikal abstrahierte Darstellung aus. Dem geometrischen Muster im flächigen Rapport steht der Schwung der konkaven Konturlinien gegenüber. Diese pointierte Ausdruckskraft und die zeitlose Modernität sind kennzeichnend für Klingers Begabung und machten ihn schnell zu einem der populärsten Berliner Plakatkünstler. Julius Klinger, einer der prägendsten Gestalter der Jugendstil-Plakatkunst, entwickelte ab 1900 zusammen mit der Druckerei Hollerbaum & Schmidt eine neue Art der funktionellen Plakatgestaltung und wurde damit bald international bekannt. Klinger lernte während seiner ersten Tätigkeit beim Wiener Magazin "Wiener Mode" seinen späteren Lehrer Koloman Moser kennen und wurde von diesem an die Meggendorfer Blätter empfohlen. (1913). -- DfP 1771. – Bereits 1873 wurde über einer Solequelle von den Architekten Walter Kyllmann und Adolf Heyden eine Badeanstalt, das so genannte "Admiralsgartenbad" gebaut, das 1910 dem von Heinrich Schweitzer und Alexander Diepenbrock errichteten "Eispalast" weichen musste. In der Eisarena kamen "Eisballette" zur Aufführung, meist Schlittschuhdarbietungen mit Musikbegleitung des eigenen Hausorchesters unter der Leitung des Komponisten Julius Einödshofer. Erst in den zwanziger Jahren wurde das Hauses als Revuetheater unter der Leitung von Herman Haller umgebaut. Das Plakat stammt damit wohl aus der Zeit als vor allem die Eisballetts stattfanden. – Mehrfach gefaltet, kaum angestaubt, wohlerhalten und sehr farbfrisch, fast tadellos.

Condition B+: minor repaired tears, abrasions and slight staining at edges; creases in margins and image. Mounted on Chartex. Klinger studied art in Vienna, and worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine Lustige Blätter. He was a prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, recognized as one of the best German poster artists and illustrators working in pre-War Berlin. He was also an accomplished typographer, whose style ranged from the flat tones and strong outlining (popular in Germany at the time), to bold and daring graphic constructions and humorous caricatures, to strictly typographic pieces like this one. The dramatic and exaggerated Umlauts in this poster are just one of many examples of Klinger's typographic experimentation. DFP-III 1717, Klinger p. 138.

Born in Vienna, he relocated to Berlin and began a career as both a conceptual thinker and designer. He wrote extensively on the philosophy of advertising and created an altogether new design language during the 1920s. He was persecuted, deported, and killed by the Nazis in 1942. This catches him at the very beginning of his career, anticipating the flat colors, crisp lines, and geometric precision of Art Deco, on behalf of an unknown entertainer. Etingen notes that "the sense of graphic strength in La Joëla is further emphasized by Klinger's limited use of text and the unadulterated exuberance of the dancer in the poster. She is the embodiment of a proud New Woman: unapologetic, proud, and strong" (Klinger, p. 79). (Art Nouveau; Dance; German)
