Stellenweise kleine Farbverluste an den Rändern des Malträgers (von früherer Rahmung). Gerahmt. - Knab war Schüler bei Carl Heideloffs in Nürnberg. Ab 1859 in München, um sich der Architekturmalerei zu widmen. Er studierte Malerei bei Arthur von Ramberg und Carl Piloty. Studienaufenthalte in Italien. In seinen Bildthemen spiegelte sich die Sehnsucht nach Arkadien sowie romantischen Motiven und Stimmungen wieder. – Oil on wooden plate. Signed. Browning from old varnish, soiled. Small paint losses in places at the edges of the painting support (from previous framing). Framed. - Knab was a student of Carl Heideloffs in Nuremberg. From 1859 in Munich to devote himself to architectural painting. He studied painting with Arthur von Ramberg and Carl Piloty. Study visits to Italy. His pictorial themes reflected a longing for Arcadia as well as Romantic motifs and moods.

Knab and dated lower left 1900/12 in original carved and gilt frame and stretcher. Ferdinand Knab was born in Würzburg and was initially trained in architecture. In 1859 he moved to Munich, where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg (1819-1875) and Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886). Later in 1868 he traveled to Italy, where he discovered his passion for romantic Ruin landscapes. Knab was a very sought after artist during his life time and was occasionally commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria for the Munich Residenz and the Linderhof Palace 13 in. x 17 in. Upper right there is a loss of color and minimal retouched spots can be seen to the landscape under UV light. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear as well as tears, loss of color and small loss of material. In 1859 he moved to Munich, where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg (1819-1875) and Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886).     Ferdinand Knab travelled to Italy in 1868 where he mainly studied the ruins of Roman antiquity. The present landscape, painted two years after this sojourn, reflects the influence of the trip. It captures the light and the atmosphere of Italy in its depiction of the antique ruins. Ferdinand Knab later became court painter to Ludwig II in Munich, where he had also studied at the academy and participated amongst others in the decoration of the winter garden in the Munich residence.
