K. has held a number of teaching positions and professorships, and is currently a professor at the Academy in Munich.

Measurements: 20 x 20 cm. Karin Kneffel attracted the attention of critics and galleries for her peculiar works whose realism radiates a paradoxical surreal sensation. In this "Portrait" of a goat, her ability to symbolically break the two-dimensionality of the painting is evident. In his paintings of animals (but also in the series of fruits, flowers, burning flames, tapestries, fabrics, and everyday objects), the pictorial surface radiates a surprising materiality, which captures the viewer. Technical virtuosity and conceptual enigma combine in her work. Karin Kneffel lives and works in Düsseldorf and Munich, Germany. Her meticulously detailed compositions often use reflections and superimposed perspectives to transform everyday scenes into dreamlike atmospheres. A student of Gerhard Richter, Kneffel has gained international recognition for her exploration of perception and illusion. Her characteristic style of painting developed from the combination of various approaches of her former teachers: in addition to an eclectic combinatorics and increased attention to colouring, her artistic development revolves above all around an analytical examination of the medium of painting. From the very beginning, she investigated the mechanisms of illusion, exploring the painterly ability to deceive in order to reveal the artificiality of the created pictorial realities themselves. Kneffel achieved great international recognition in the 2000s with her paintings of fruit, whose deceptive authenticity and striking visual language on oversized, monumental formats challenge perception. The banal pictorial object stands here in tense contrast to its sometimes wall-filling presence and the significance attributed to it as a result. Kneffel emphasises the discrepancy between motif and painting style, between authentic existence and the (falsifying) process of depiction. Art history and artificiality In her early animal portraits, created in the 1980s, chickens, cows, sheep and other farm animals populate the picture surface. In the art-historical tradition, this genre of portrait was reserved for aristocratic personnel and served a representative purpose. Instead of lavishly decorated kings and wealthy burghers, Kneffel now depicts the animalistic protagonists of rural life without pomp or posturing. Kneffel draws on art history to present variations of visualisation and to reveal the variety of falsifying stylistic devices used by painters when dealing with their subjects. The undisguised animal in its natural environment is also at the mercy of the appropriating gaze of the artist - and later of the viewers of her works. Her portraits point to the artificiality of the forms of representation, to conventions and clichés in visual culture. Kneffel is not interested in reproducing reality. Rather, she is concerned with the reproduction of artificial visual worlds. Rigid stage set Hühnerhof" also impressively illustrates Kneffel's media-reflexive, image-critical approach. The painting proves to be the image of a fiction. A gathering of chickens on an earthy ground against a sky of impenetrable leaden blue-grey is captured with a vigorous impasto brushstroke. Several hens are crowded together in the foreground of the painting, while a cockerel is perched on a haystack in the centre. The cropped nature of the scenically limited pictorial space does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the spatial surroundings; on the contrary, the uniform lighting makes the depicted scene look like an unnaturally frozen stage set. Simulation, emptying of meaning and new painterly realities By using an old masterly technique and drawing on a subject that was particularly popular in Dutch genre paintings of the 17th century, Karin Kneffel picks up on a tradition that is now exhausted, however, degenerating into a mere pictorial formula without content. Kneffel's sophisticated play with the simulation and emptying of meaning of catchy categories such as ‘rural idyll’ and the expectations associated with them holds up a mirror to painting. In her increasingly complex works, Kneffel presents the familiar, luring viewers into supposedly familiar territory, only to confront them with the conditions of their reception and throw them back on themselves without any foundation. In the 1980s, Kneffel produced portraits of animals, such as chickens and cows, in contrast to the expressive gestures of the Neue Wilde. With the subversive emptying of meaning and undermining of the traditional, representative genre of painting by introducing such questionable subjects, the master student of Gerhard Richter pursues a decidedly image-analytical painting that takes into account and deconstructs both genre-specific guidelines and production and reception aesthetic criteria. In Kneffel's works, the enamel of the colour application, the sensual surface stimulus initially seduces the viewer. An irresistible closeness to the realistically reproduced motif is created, often larger-than-life plump fruit, sometimes shimmering coloured flowers and still lifes, whose perfect appearance is captured so vividly and strikingly that the reference to the consumer-oriented visual language of advertising and the associated effects of Pop Art becomes obvious. Through her choice of subjects and stylistic devices, Kneffel simulates specific characteristics linked to historical epochs or genres. She draws on the various painterly possibilities to create changing (pictorial) realities. By referring directly to the intention of creating illusions, Kneffel demonstrates the essential quality of painting as such: The inherent artificiality of the medium, the pretence and falsification of intention, becomes the central theme of the picture. The present painting ‘Landscape’ is a particularly impressive illustration of Karin Kneffel's media-critical approach. Behind an ornate cast-iron grid, an extensive plot of land with slight hills and groups of trees stretches out like a park, possibly surrounding a stately home. However, the tall, unruly, crooked pine trees contrast with the curved vegetal ornamental shapes of the lattice. The sun is low on the horizon and the blue tones of the sky change from a light, airy light blue at the bottom to a saturated ink blue at the top of the picture. The viewers: outside or inside? However, one pictorial element with an unrivalled presence comes to the fore. The volutes of the lattice, which taper into heraldic fleurs-de-lis, fill the picture and virtually block the unobstructed view of the idyll. By introducing this disruption, Kneffel bypasses the conventional form of depiction of the landscape evoked in the title. Her works cast doubt on the credibility of the image; above all, the topos of the image as a window is undermined. The (impaired) gaze and the viewing process itself take centre stage in this painting. Karin Kneffel's paintings prove to be pictures of fragile images. In them, the artist reveals the manipulative power of the artist: Through him, viewers are given access to the pictorial event, but through him they also remain on the outside, they are presented in their role as voyeurs, sometimes as intruders - but above all thrown back on their reality. With this rejection, Kneffel nevertheless seems to turn the classic repoussoir motif, which is intended to show the viewer the way into the pictorial event, into its opposite. But she also seems to refute art-historical considerations, such as those set out by Wolfgang Kemp in his influential book ‘Der Betrachter ist im Bild’. With subtlety and humour, Kneffel thus transfers the function of the grid to the fundamental relationship between viewer and picture. The boundary between the areas in front of and behind the grid emphasises the tension between distance and closeness, reality and illusion, between disappointment and expectation. An oversized fruit branch with vibrant shiny red apples and lush green leaves dominates Karin Kneffel’s painting from 1996. A distant, hilly landscape, which appears almost model-like due to the precisely placed trees, unfolds behind the monumental fruits. The extreme shift in perspective lends the work a surreal tension: the gaze oscillates between close-up and distant views, between sensual opulence and cartographic order. The combination of fruit and landscapes depicted from different perspectives characterises one type of Karin Kneffel’s hyperrealistic fruit paintings, which were created from the mid-1990s onward. When asked how the idea of painting fruit came about, the artist answered in an interview in 2019, ‘First of all, at that time, I was annoyed by the fact that at the academy in Düsseldorf said you weren’t allowed to paint this or that - fruit or animals, for example. [...] Such prohibitions never made sense to me and rather aroused my interest. What’s more, the fruit seemed to me to emphasise the particular features of a painted depiction compared to reality. How does a painting identify itself as a painting? I was driven by questions about reality and realism. What about beauty?’ (Karin Kneffel in dialogue with Julia Voss, in: Still, Karin Kneffel, exhib.cat., Kunsthalle Bremen, Museum Frieder Burda, Munich 2019, p.85.) By depicting fruit as a symbol of reality, the artist refers to the tradition of Vanitas and still life paintings. These are often interpreted as depictions of the transience of life – an aspect Kneffel does not take up, however. She reinforces the perception of her art as an independent world detached from reality by using various strategies: She uses extreme enlargements, emphasises the textures and colours of the perfectly depicted fruit and works with contained layers of pictorial space to explore the boundary between reality and realism, naturalness and artificiality. The smoothness of her depiction is reinforced by a painting style that does not reveal any brushstrokes. In Karin Kneffel’s hyper-realistic depictions of everyday objects, a moment of irritation is invariably inherent. The viewer looks at the pearly white sculptures, each of which dominate a part of the diptych, from varying perspectives. Classic genres such as wildlife painting, interiors, and fruit still-lives characterise her work at the end of the 1990s and beginning of the 2000s. The motif chosen here stands out in particular from the artist’s oeuvre. The enlarged depiction of the motif and the use of unusual image detail, typical of works by Kneffel, inhibit a distinct deduction of the image context. The artist constantly challenges the viewer's perception. This ‘[...] is no longer just about illustrating our visual orientation. It is rather also about visualising our cognitive orientation’, as Daniel J.
