Laura Knight(1877-1970)
Who is Laura Knight?
From the beginning, artist Dame Laura Knight impressed the masses. She was accepted into the Nottingham School of Art in 1899 at just 13 years old, a move emblematic of her career spent bucking expectations. At Nottingham, Knight studied oils and watercolors among other forms, and 12 years later sold her first commercially successful painting, The Green Feather. Dame Laura Knight's paintings often focused on female subjects who, like her, were pushing boundaries.

New movements emerged throughout her 50-year career, but Dame Laura Knight's prints and paintings consistently embraced Impressionism. For her efforts, artist Laura Knight was made a Dame in 1929, and in 1936, she became the first woman elected a full member of the Royal Academy. DAME LAURA KNIGHT, DBE RA RWS (BRITISH 1877-1970)
Circus horse
signed Laura Knight (lower left)
black chalk and watercolour
23.5 x 30 cm (9 1/4 x 12 in)

'I have often tried to analyse the circus appeal. It is the display of indomitable courage that one sees and admires, an admiration inherent in the human race'. (Laura Knight, Oil Paint and Grease Paint, Autobiography of Laura Knight, London, 1936, p. 299)

During her life-time it was her paintings of the circus for which Laura Knight was best-known. Knight first started painting and drawing circus scenes when a porter at Paddington station suggested that she go to a â??real old-fashioned circusâ?? at the Agricultural Hall at Islington. In 1923 or 1924 Alfred Munnings introduced her to Captain Bertram Mills who had just started his world famous circus. Mills gave Knight permission to paint and sketch whatever caught her imagination in his circus and a year later she joined Harry Cameron's The Great Carmo circus where she was fully immersed into everyday circus life. Knight was captivated by the circus and the multitude of spectacles that it offered for sketching.

During Laura Knight's time with the circus in the 1920s she sketched horses for the first time and excitedly described the opportunity, â??I found a brave opportunity in Carmoâ??s stable tent â?? what a joy! Although four-footed, such an animalâ??s anatomy can be compared with that of the human body, and I did not lose any opportunity to learn all I could about something I had always wished to study. How I loved those beasts.â?? (Laura Knight, The Magic of a Line: The Autobiography, London, 1965, p. 239).

'The Golden Cloak', Diaghilev Ballet, backstage
signed and dated Laura Knight 1922 (lower right)
watercolour and ink
29.5 x 23.8 cm (11 5/8 x 9 3/8 in)

PROVENANCE:
Sale, Gorringe's, East Sussex, 2004, lot 2049
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner

â??Laura was undoubtedly happiest when painting informal scenes backstage or dancers in their dressing roomsâ?¦ Her dressing-room paintings express this joy in her surroundingsâ?¦â?? (Caroline Fox, Dame Laura Knight, 1988, p. 52).

In 1919 Laura Knight moved from Cornwall to London where she was invited backstage by the great impresario Sergei Diaghilev during the third season of his Ballets Russes. This new subject matter absorbed and fascinated Knight and she attended every show capturing the initimate backstage rituals of the performers. She was embraced by the ballerinas and given an intimacy that a male artist would not have been permitted. Laura painted many of the leading ballet stars at the time including Nijinsky, Karsavina, Lopokova, Massime and Pavlova.

The present lot is one of a series of sketches that Knight executed behind the scenes at the ballet. At the right of the composition is a ballet dancer in costume, gracefully stretching in preparation for her performance. The shadowed background hints at the unseen buzz of anticipation beyond. One can almost sense the excited murmur of the audience taking their seats and the tuning of the orchestra.

[THE GAME OF BRIDGE] Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) English artist

Lot 516: [THE GAME OF BRIDGE] Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) English artist

Auction Date: Nov 18, 2021

Estimate: $150 - $250

Description: [THE GAME OF BRIDGE] Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) English artist. During her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. In 1929 she was created a Dame and in 1936 became the first woman elected to the Royal Academy since its foundation in 1768. Her large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy, in 1965, was another first for a woman. Although Knight was known for painting amidst the world of the theatre and ballet in London, and for being a war artist during the Second World War, she was also greatly interested in, and inspired by, more marginalised communities and individuals including Gypsies and circus performers. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. A letter sent to Knight from a newspaper editor stating that Winston Churchill confessed that he "hardly ever" played bridge, someone retorted, "Funny that so few people of brains do." He asks Orpen "Is this observation true? Then asks "Do you play bridge, if so, whuy; if not, why Not?" Knight gives her answer signing L.K. VG.....

[THE GAME OF BRIDGE] Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) English artist

Lot 516: [THE GAME OF BRIDGE] Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) English artist

Auction Date: Feb 18, 2021

VG.....
