Max Friedrich Koch (1859-1930), Winter Landscape, circa 1920

        Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Oil on canvas Germany, probably around 1920 Max Friedrich Koch (1859-1930) - Berlin painter Signed lower right, ‘Max Koch’ Overall dimensions, framed: 86 x 111 cm The highest auction record for a painting by Max Friedrich Koch is more than 7000 euros The present winter composition of the Berlin painter Max Friedrich Koch (1859-1930) is characterized by a wide view over snowy hills, mountains and tree tops. Some brownish-red leaves of shrubs keep the view in the foreground. The bluish nuances in the snow suggest some foot stamps. Deciduous and coniferous trees alternate in the middle ground. Behind them opens a panoramic view. With great skill, the painter has rendered the landscape with harmonious perspectives and muted color nuances. This is a fascinating painting, which exudes calm and harmony. Lower right is the signature of the artist, ‘Max Koch’. The painting shows some wear marks. The canvas is lightly waved and has two central nicks. The paint surface shows areas of abrasion, crackle and yellowish discoloration, probably originating from the varnish. The frame shows material losses. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 86 x 111 cm. The stretcher measures 76 x 100.5 cm. Max Friedrich Koch (1859-1930) Max Friedrich Koch attended the art academy of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin. He studied under Ernst Ewald, Eduard Schaller and M. Meurer. In 1876, he traveled to Italy and only finished his studies upon his return to Germany. From 1879 onwards, he participated in the interior decoration of the opera in Frankfurt/Main under the architect and painter Friedrich von Thiersch. In 188, he studied at the Academy Julian in Paris. Two years later, Max Friedrich Koch came back to Berlin, where he thenceforth worked as a teacher at his former school and regularly exhibited his works in major German exhibitions.
