Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Two Pendants: Summer and Winter

          Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Each signed and dated lower left on a stone: B C Koekkoek 1854 / B C Koekkoek ft. 1854 This composition embodies summer, with a rider, a shepherd and a cow on a path leading into a forest, and a small stream on the left edge of the picture bathed in warm, golden light. The embodiment of winter in the second painting is a snow-covered riverside path with numerous figures, jagged rocks and a view of a castle complex on a hill, depicted in the cold, clear light of a frosty winter day. Despite their small format, these two pendents contain an impressive wealth of detail and finesse in their execution. They are a beautiful example of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek's preference for depicting the seasonal contrasts of summer and winter. However, there does not seem to be a cycle of all four seasons by his hand. The two paintings, dated 1854, are also a striking example of the more complex landscape depictions painted during the artist's more mature phase, in contrast to the earlier works, which feature simpler compositions with panoramic landscapes. Ultimately, however, Koekkoek, who is considered the most important landscape painter of Dutch Romanticism although he moved to Kleve in 1834, was always concerned with depicting the beauty of nature and the harmony between man and the natural world. The reverse of each of the panels bears a label with a hand-written confirmation of authenticity by the artist. Summer: “Dit Schilderijtje, voorstellende een / Boomrijk Landschap bij namiddag / Zon, is geschilderd in het jaar 1854 / Door den Ondergeteekende / B:C: Koekkoek“, Winter: “Dit Schilderijtje, voor[stellende] / Een Boom in rotsachtig [landschap] / bij Winter, is geschilderd in /1854 door den Ondergeteeken[de] / B:C: Koekkoek“ (the label on “Winter“ with some missing spots). Each also bears a label with the coat-of-arms of the Count of Bylandt (with minor losses on the “Summer“) and the Kunstsalon Herm. Abels in Cologne. We would like to thank Dr Guido de Werd for confirming these paintings to be the works of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. He intends to include the pieces in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné.

Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Large Winter Landscape

          Est: €100,000 - €120,000

Signed and dated lower left: B. C. Koekkoek 1834 This imposing winter landscape is one of the early large format works by the Dutch landscape painter. After a "Summer Landscape" painted in 1830 (98 x 128 cm, Gorissen 30/98) and a "Mountain Landscape" painted in 1833, once in the possession of Queen Wilhelmina, this picture is an impressive example of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek's landscape painting. The viewer's gaze begins at a tree-covered rock face on the left edge of the picture and is led into the distance by means of a path and the course of a river. The painting was created in 1834, the year B. C. Koekkeok moved to Kleve. Although it is a rather early work, it already combines all the characteristics and quality of this great landscape painter: the masterly perspective, the detailed depiction of nature and the atmosphere. The evening light shimmers slightly golden through the bare and snow-covered branches of a group of trees in the centre and illuminates the few clouds in the sky from below. A lone farmer drives his loaded mules past a chapel that stands to the left of the path. Koekkeok had by then already found the tone and mood for his paintings, which were to be celebrated throughout Europe.

Gorissen: B.C. Koekkoek, 1803-1862. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Düsseldorf 1962, no. 49/40. Provenance: Collection Werner, Baden-Baden; Collection Körber, Brunswick; Lempertz, Cologne 25/27.6.1987 Lot 326; Private ownership, Germany. Barend Cornelis, the eldest and probably the most successful of the four sons of the painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, painted the present Rhine landscape in Kleve in 1849. The play with light in his landscape paintings is captivating, and he mastered it like no other. The effect that the main representative of Dutch Romanticism achieved through the targeted use of light and shadow effects charmed already his contemporaries. The present painting is one of the finest works by the artist. It depicts a deep and sweeping view of the stormy Rhine landscape, which is also representative of the artist's topographical interest. Viewed from an elevated vantage point, the Siebengebirge with its popular excursion destination, the Drachenfels, can be seen on the other side of the river. An approaching thunderstorm darkens the sky; the last rays of sunlight fall on the opposite bank while the tree in the foreground is caught by the strong wind. Dust rises and a couple laboriously walks along the castle against the wind. The composition is incomparable, clearly inspired by the reality of an existing place and romanticising nature. We are grateful to Guido de Werd, Cologne, for confirming the authenticity of the present work after examination in the original. Explanations to the Catalogue

---------------
