Clemens Kohl (1754 Prag - 1807 Vienna) after Johann Heinrich Ramberg (1763 Hannover - 1840 ibid.): The Enchanting Princess Sonnemon, Gandalin or Love for Love, after Christoph Martin Wieland, 1796, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: Titled and inscribed in the plate below the image: "H.Ramberg del. 1795 / Cl. Kohl sc. Viennae 1796 / SONNEMON. / Always and always she stands, in the golden evening gleam, so sweetly blushing , before his face." Depiction of immense tenderness and loveliness. Published in 1776 by Christoph Martin Wieland under the title "Love for Love", the story is set in twelfth-century Brabant and concerns the enchanting Princess Sonnemon, who is courted by countless suitors. The most indefatigable is a knight named Gandalin. She finally demands a test of love from him. The engraver Clemens Kohl joined the Vienna Academy in 1775. In particular favour with the regent Maria Theresa, she appointed him her drawing master, later also as Imperial and Royal Court copper engraver. The first edition of Wieland's works contains engravings by him, such as this one: "Sonnemon", 1796. C.M. Wieland's Sämmtliche Werke. One and twentieth volume. I. Gandalin or Love for Love. II. Klelia and Sinibald. Leipzig, printed by Georg Joachim Göschen. 1796, Leipzig, printed by Georg Joachim Göschen. Frontispiece: "Sonnemon".
