His work was first exhibited in 1937 and has been shown internationally in museums including at the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1975, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid in 1996 and most recently at the National Gallery of Prague in 2018. The present lot is from Jiri Kolar's 'Baudelaire- Les Fleurs de Mal', series. In each piece the artist used a painting interwoven with a portrait of the poet, Charles Baudelaire. Each work captures a particular line from Baudelaires collection of poems Les Fleurs de Mal (The Flowers of Evil). This is one of Kolar's most iconic images, and works from this series can be found in institutions around the world including the Tate (reference no.T05031)

Signed and numbered by hand. Measurements: 90 x 63 cm. The Olympic Suite consists of 50 lithographs and silkscreen prints selected to represent various contemporary artistic trends. It was published to commemorate the first centennial of the modern Olympic movement. The selected artists work in a wide variety of movements and styles, ranging from Antonio López’s hyperrealism to Sol Lewitt’s abstraction, including Abstract Expressionism, Arden Quin’s Geometrism, Conceptual Art, Pop Art, the New Realism of Baldaccini and Rotella, and the New Fauvism of Dokoupil, among others. Among the artists represented are creators of great international renown, widely recognized by critics. Born into a working-class family, Jiri Kolar moved to Prague in 1945, where he first worked as an editor before devoting himself to poetry and the creation of collages. Kolar’s artistic language is influenced by Surrealism and Poetism (a Czech avant-garde poetic movement), with particular emphasis on his “rollages”—a technique involving the lamination of major works of art into strips, which are then reconstructed from a new perspective. However, the communists’ rise to power in Czechoslovakia prevented Kolar from freely exhibiting and publishing his works. In fact, in 1950 he was imprisoned for publishing a text titled “The Liver of Prometheus,” which challenged the prevailing ideology of the time, closely linked to Socialist Realism. After a period of political activism, Kolar emigrated to France, where he remained until the fall of communism in 1989, regaining his Czech passport in 1992. Throughout his career as an artist, Jiri Kolar has held numerous exhibitions in both Europe and the United States, most notably the one held in 1881 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Jiří Kolář perceived mirrors as impartial witnesses of time. He incorporated them into his works as ironic objects, but he also admired their ability to reflect thoughts, fragments, and snippets of works, and he was fascinated by the metaphorical nature of broken mirrors. In his original collage, he addresses his sources of inspiration by confronting Henri Rousseau's dreamlike painting, which depicts Guillaume Apollinaire and his muse Marie Laurencin, both set in fantastical vegetation with carnations growing in front of them. Jiří Kolář never ceased to be a poet. Although his work is playful and full of puns, his use of collage and chiasm is the sophisticated result of long experimentation. Jiří Kolář places the image, as a mere fragment of reality, into context, while the word becomes an image. He transformed himself from a poet into a visual artist, giving words a three-dimensional form and turning everyday objects into poems. Destruction leads to the creation of a new means of expression, and the story is told by an object that becomes the bearer of the message. The text is destroyed to such an extent that its reading is abstracted into the mere perception of image points and lines, thus preventing conventional perception. The original function of the object that carries the collage is only reminiscent in its shape and becomes an ironic carrier of new meaning. Chiasmage is a collage technique using paper printed with symbols, torn into small pieces and glued to a base in all directions as "chiasmata." Jiří Kolář's work is an extraordinary phenomenon on the art scene. He was a member of Group 42, UB, and Křižovatka. He was an authority and a personality around whom various artists and intellectuals gathered. He coordinated various activities, such as the samizdat edition Petlice, and in 1977 he signed Charter 77. From 1980, he lived with his wife Běla in Paris, where, together with other Czech emigrants, he supported the publication of Revue K.
