    • GAVRIL KONDRATENKO (Russia, 1854-1924). "Lake landscape".1884. Oil on canvas. Signed and signed in cyrilic in the lower left corner.

GAVRIL KONDRATENKO (Russia, 1854-1924). "Lake landscape".1884. Oil on canvas. Signed and signed in cyrilic in the lower left corner.

      Est: €14,000 - €18,000

GAVRIL PAVLOVIC KONDRATENKO (Penza, Russia, 1854-1924). "Lake landscape".1884. Oil on canvas. Signed and signed in Cyrillic in the lower left corner. Size: 80 x 134 cm; 106 x 160 cm (frame). A wide chromatic spectrum based on siennas and tans unfolds on this immense lake landscape, immortalised with singular plastic sensibility, under the twilight of an autumnal sun. The valley absorbs the iridescent shifts of the wide sky, mottled with pink clouds, like a thick, fluffy carpet. The lightness of the clouds contrasts with the thicket of trees. A stream of still, reflective water shelters a small boat. Next to it, we can make out a group of four people whose discreet silhouettes are blurred amidst the studied symphony of ochre. Despite being born into a peasant family, Gavril Kondratenko studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1873-1882), first in history painting under K. F. Gunn, then in landscape painting under M. K. Klodt. In 1881 he received a first gold medal for landscape painting. In 1882 he graduated from the Academy. He settled in St. Petersburg (Petrograd - Leningrad), travelled often to cities in Russia, Ukraine, Caucasus and Crimea. He visited Italy and Greece in 1890-1900 and in 1914. He specialised in landscapes and still lifes. In 1880 he received the first prize for landscape painting from the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts for his painting "Neglected Park". In the 1880s he painted a series of 20 landscapes with views of places in Lermontov in Moscow and the Caucasus. Kondratenko participated in the exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1883-1918, intermittently), the Society for the Promotion of the Arts (1883-1886) and the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1887-1890). He also participated in the All-Russian Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896), the Paris World's Fair (1900) and the Exhibition of Works by Petrograd Artists of All Artistic Movements (1923). Kondratenko was a member and exhibitor at the St. Petersburg Society of Artists (1891-1918). He also headed the Committee for the Organisation of Exhibitions in 1893-1897. He was a member and participant in the exhibitions of the A. I. Kuindzhi Society of Artists (1917-1918; member of the Society since 1910). Kondratenko devoted himself not only to easel painting and graphic art, but also to book illustration. In 1891 he drew illustrations for the poem Rusalka ("Mermaid") by A. S. Pushkin; in 1914-1915 he worked on the design of the collected works of M. Y. Lermontov. From 1892 he was a member of the board of the Association of Illustrators. His love of the Russian landscape and his independent spirit led him to become one of the founders of the famous Society of Travelling Exhibitions in 1868. Looking at his master's work, it becomes clearer that Kondratenko moved away from the realist school and towards the more lyrical and expressive style of the Kuindzhi school.

      KONDRATENKO, GAVRIIL (1854-1924) - Seascape

      Est: £120,000 - £180,000

KONDRATENKO, GAVRIIL (1854-1924) Seascape , signed. Oil on canvas, 62 by 98 cm. Provenance: Private collection, UK. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert N. Ignatova. Authenticity certificate from the expert V. Petrov. Exhibited: Possibly, The 11th Exhibition of the St Petersburg Society of Artists, St Petersburg, 1903. Literature: Exhibition catalogue, The 11th Exhibition of the St Petersburg Society of Artists, St Petersburg, 1903, p. 17, possibly listed as No. 108. Gavriil Kondratenko, a distinguished Russian landscape artist of the second half of the 19th century, known for his exotic landscape views of the Crimea, Caucasus and south of Russia, is represented here by an impressive canvas entitled Seascape. A graduate of the St Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, Kondratenko commenced his studies in Karl Gun's historical painting class, and later, from 1873 until 1882, studied under Mikhail Klodt, a renowned Russian landscape artist and an adherent of the academic Realism school. The present lot vividly illustrates Kondratenko building on the foundations of both of his teachers. On the one hand, one can deduce the apparent influence of Klodt - in the degree of technical skill in conveying the effects of sunlight and shadow on the water and the rocks, the precision of the brushwork, and the use of staffage - the background figures strolling along the coast and the sail in the distance towards the horizon - which adds depth to the work. However, it is obvious that Kondratenko goes beyond Klodt's realism and adopts a more lyrical, expressive style typical of Kuindzhi's school. The brushstrokes in Kondratenko's Seascape are broader and more visible, the composition more liberal, with the artist focusing on conveying the atmosphere of a relaxed summer day and the beautiful sunlit coast with the waves splashing up against the rocks. With its crisp precision and skilfulness, Seascape is both a vivid example of Kondratenko's late oeuvre and, more generally, a superb illustration of the achievements of the late 19th century Russian landscape genre.

Trizna, from the St Olga series

      Est: £80,000 - £120,000

KONDRATENKO, GAVRIIL 1854-1924 Trizna, from the St Olga series , signed. Oil on canvas, 63 by 98 cm. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov. Exhibited: Exhibition of Paintings by G. Kondratenko "In Honour of St Olga" , Imperial Academy of Science, 1910. Literature: Exhibition catalogue, Exhibition of Paintings by G. Kondratenko "In Honour of St Olga" , Imperial Academy of Science, 1910, No. 8, listed. Trizna by Gavriil Kondratenko displays the style for which he achieved success and popularity among the Academic salon habitués of St Petersburg. The subject of twilit and nocturnal landscapes attracted the artist, inspiring his improvisations with the use of staffage and lighting effects. Trizna , in which Kondratenko gave expression to his passion for Ancient Rus and Russian antiquity, belongs to this category. The use of historical and mythical subjects in a naturalistic manner was popular among artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially among members of the Abramtsevo group. Their dreams of reviving the high culture of the past and of creating a new "grand style" based on it enriched their art with vivid images and expressive techniques.

GAVRIL PAVLOVICH KONDRATENKO (RUSSIAN 1854-1924), "Moonlit Winter Evening with Solitary Figure", oil on board, 23 x 14 cm (9 x 5 1/2 in.), signed in Cyrillic lower left and dated 1903. Soloviev's "Russkie Khudozhnik XVIII-XX Vekov" notes in the entry for Kondratenko the artist's fondness for "exotic landscapes," with the "obligatory lighting effects, moonlit nights, and elegant incidental figures" (page 165). Inspection of this painting under UV light shows that while the signature is original to the painting, the date of 1903 was added, or possibly strengthened, later.

KONDRATENKO, GAVRIIL 1854-1924 The Old Park

      Est: £60,000 - £90,000

KONDRATENKO, GAVRIIL 1854-1924 The Old Park signed, c. 1880 Oil on canvas, 141 by 113 cm. Authenticity has been confirmed by Vladimir Petrov. Related literature: For similar works, see F.I. Bulgakov, Nashi Khudozhniki, St Petersburg, 1889. The Old Park is one of the few extant landscapes by Gavriil Kondratenko that are devoted to the theme of the nature of central Russia. Having spent his life travelling, the artist gave preference to the academic salon - style views of the southern Crimean coast, which also represent the lion's share of his legacy; alongside these, he showed preference for romanticised views of Georgia or Italy and the bleak castles of the Baltic. Therefore, portrayals of the artist's native Penza or of the environs of Moscow or St Petersburg - views of the Savvinskiy Monastery and Pavlovsk - are very few. It was, however, for one such work, The Park Grown Wild, that in 1880 the artist was awarded the First prize for landscape painting by the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. This recognition also prompted Kondratenko to create a series of twenty landscapes connected with locations that were associated with the great Russian poet Lermontov. By 1884 the series had been completed, and Kondratenko organised a personal exhibition devoted to various sites connected with the memory of his famed fellow countryman. The artist's landscapes revealed a panorama of a lovely Russian estate of Tarkhana, the poet's birthplace, views of Moscow and its environs, and those of Pyatigorsk and the North Caucasus. The exhibition was a resounding success, and the proceeds of the sale of tickets and catalogues were used to create a monument to Lermontov and provide financial assistance to men of letters and scholars. The Old Park is in all likelihood part of this remarkable series. It depicts a small corner of an old park with a pond choked with weeds and an old summerhouse of the estate of Serednikovo that survived the invasion by Napoleon's army and had once time belonged to Major General Dmitriy Alekseevich Stolypin, the brother of Lermontov's grandmother Ye.A. Arsenieva. Serednikovo, a country estate with a park dating back to the late XVIII or early XIX century, was one of the most famous locations in Russia associated with Lermontov. The estate was situated in the Solnechnogorsk district of the Moscow province, to the south of the town of Firsanovka. By the time Lermontov's relatives gained possession of the estate, a two-storey house with a belvedere and four wings, which had been built by the architect Ivan Starov, already sat on a high hill. By the time Kondratenko had begun work on the Lermontov series, the lady of the estate was Vera Ivanovna Firsanova - a famous patron of the arts who had carried out significant refurbishment works on the estate, creating the image of an ideal Russian country estate of the "Golden Age". Vera Ivanovna, who had received a good education, translated Goethe and Byron and loved music, and under her light touch the estate was transformed into a cultural centre for the Moscow area. The "Serednikovo Thursdays" were a magnet not only for the neighbouring gentry: the violin player and composer Julius Konius, Fyodor Shalyapin and Sergei Rakhmaninov were guests here on numerous occasions, and Valentin Serov and Konstantin Yuon sketched and painted their studies and landscapes in the estate's lovely park.

Authenticity has been confirmed by Vladimir Petrov. Exhibited: Exhibition of St. Petersburg Union of Artists, St. Petersburg, 1904. Literature: Journal Niva, St. Petersburg, 1904, N17, illustrated. Journal Rodina, 1904, N 35, illustrated. Related literature: For similar works see G. Romanov and A. Muratov, Artists of the Russian Salon (1850-1917), Zolotoi Vek, St. Petersburg 2004, p. 308. A Russian landscape painter and a representative of the academicsalon trend in Russian landscape painting at the turn ofthe century, Kondratenko was renowned for his Crimean landscapes. After graduating from M. K. Klodt's class in the St.Petersburg Academy of Arts with a small gold medal and the titleof First Class Artist Grade 2 awarded to him for his workNight in Bakhchisarai, Kondratenko retained a love for the lushbeauty of southern Russian nature throughout his life. Everyyear he would head off to the Crimea or the Caucasus seekingnew inspiration, and would invariably return weighed down withseveral dozen first class romanticised views. His numerous "exotic"southern landscapes, which were painted in the traditions ofthe seaside resort compositions of L. O. Premazzi, with the accompanyinglighting effects, moonlit nights and elegant figures, enjoyed enormous success among the fashionable public of theSt. Petersburg salons during the 1880s and 1890s. For example,Grand Prince Mikhail Nikolaevich purchased from the artistView Of Kazbek and Stolovaya Mountain from the Environs ofVladikavkaz, and Baron P. Derviz purchased The Ruins of anAncient Fortress Close to Balaclava; and the Crimean landscapesSevastopol by Moonlight (1882), Sudak Bay by Evening (1884) andBakhchisarai by Night came to be regarded as genuine masterpieceseven during his lifetime. An example of Kondratenko's popular Crimean canvases whichwere so highly prized by his contemporaries is the work presentedhere for auction, View of Gurzuf, Crimea. Its composition incorporatesthe artist's favoured motif of a rocky seashore overwhich is diffused a hazy pre-sunset light. The representation ofsuch light effects was always Kondratenko's forte. The artist's authority was so great that when in the 1880s heagain went to the Crimea to make some sketch studies andcame across a beggar woman in Sevastopol who turned out tobe a former Sister of Mercy he was able to solicit the assistanceof his influential acquaintances in the capital who were admirersof his work, and quickly set up the "St. PetersburgGuardianship Committee of the Sisters of the Red Cross" underthe patronage of the granddaughter of Emperor Nicholas I,Princess Yevgeniya Maksimilianovna Oldenburgskaya.

Gavril Pavlovich Kondratenko (Pawlowsk 1854-1924) View of Florence from the South with the Campanile, Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore and Palazzo Vecchio, signed in Cyrillic, Oil on canvas, 42,5 x 67,5 cm, framed, (Rei) Gavriil Pawlowitsch Kondratenko: He was a prominent exponent of late 19th and early 20th Century Russian landscape painting. Between 1873-1882 he was a guest student at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. In 1881 he won the silver medal at the Academy and in 1884 held his first exhibition in St. Petersburg. From 1910 he was a member of the Kouindji Society of Landscape Painters. Between 1880-1914 he travelled around Southern Russia, the Ukraine, Crimea, the Caucasus as well as Italy and Greece. In the 1880s Kondratenko dedicated a series of landscapes to the great Russian poet Lermontov; Russian literature, culture and history played an important role in his work. The "View of Florence from the South" represents Florence not as a tourist destination, but the romantic city to whom generati ns of Russian poets dedicated their lines, such as N. V. Gogol, A. A. Blok; the painting has an elevated, ethereal quality to it. The panoramic composition, as well as the high visual focus, is typical of Kondratenko. The quality of the paintwork places the picture within the best period of this artist's productivity, and is at the latest an early 20th Century work. Kondratenko's works can be found in the Tretjakow Gallery in Moscow, in the St. Petersburg State Museum as well as in other museums in Russia and the Ukraine. The "View of Florence from the South" has been in the collection of the current owner since the late 1960s.
