ALBERTO KORDA (Havana, 1928- 2001). "Che Guevara-The Heroic Guerrilla", c.1960. Handmade copy by the author of the original negative. Signed and dedicated in the upper left part.

    Est: €3,000 - €3,500

ALBERTO KORDA (Havana, 1928- 2001). "Che Guevara-The Heroic Guerrilla", c.1960. Handmade copy by the author of the original negative. Signed and dedicated in the upper left part. Measurements: 30 x 21 cm. Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, better known as Alberto Korda (Havana, Cuba, September 14, 1928 - Paris, May 25, 2001), was a Cuban photographer known worldwide as the author of the mythical photograph of Che Guevara "The Heroic Guerrilla". Korda had his first contact with photography when he took his father's camera and began to photograph his girlfriend. He began to work professionally at banquets, weddings and baptisms. In 1953 he opened his first studio with photographer Luis Pierce. Korda and Pierce did a variety of work ranging from fashion to advertising. During this period Korda was able to develop his unique style of capturing the image from another angle, in a way that was very different from other traditional photography studios. It was this style that defined and popularized Korda's photography, who eventually opened his own business under the name 'Korda Studios'. In the early years he was more interested in fashion, eventually becoming Cuba's leading fashion photographer. Korda disliked artificial lighting, saying it was "a parody of reality" and only used natural light in his studio. He emerged as the master of black and white photography and through his work sought the perfect composition and framing. Korda had a unique creative ambition that contrasted with the unimaginative cultural perspective of traditional Cuban photography. This creativity turned his business into an art studio. His photographic work has been exhibited in major galleries on the European continent and in the Americas, as well as in other parts of the world. But in 1959 his career took a 180-degree turn. With the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Korda went to work for the Revolution and accompanied Fidel Castro as official photographer in different tours that the Cuban leader carried out. 1960 was the year that changed Korda's life forever, since in that year he took the famous photograph The Heroic Guerrilla, which is considered by great critics as one of the ten best photographic portraits of all times and has become the most reproduced photograph in history, at the same time that it has changed forever the aesthetics of the revolutionary man. Korda himself made very few copies during his lifetime from his own original negative. The vast majority of images that have been reproduced throughout history are photocopies of the historic photograph.

Alberto Korda Photograph "El Quijote de la Farola" 1959

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Alberto Korda (Cuban, 1928-2001). "El Quijote de la Farola (Don Quixote of the Lamp Post)" gelatin silver print, photographed in 1959, printed in 1980. Hand-signed at lower right. A stirring photograph by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda, who became known for photographing Che Guevara. A man within the vast crowd climbed to the top of the lamppost to get a better view of Fidel Castro making a speech. Korda made El Quijote de la Farola on July 26, 1959 at Revolution Square in Havana when a crowd of over 500,000 farmers came from the countryside to hear a speech by Castro, who recently became Prime Minister. Here Korda captured the density of the crowd and features a spectator who perched atop a lamp post to gain a better view over the masses. In the title, Korda references the idealistic character from the classic novel Don Quixote. Size of image: 16" L x 14" W (40.6 cm x 35.6 cm); of frame: 23" W x 25.5" H (58.4 cm x 64.8 cm) About the artist: "Alberto Diaz Gutierrez Korda (Cuban, September 19, 1928 - May 25, 2001) is considered to be the man who made Ernesto 'Che' Guevara an icon. His image of Che became one of the most famous pictures of the 20th century. Born in Havana as the son of a railway worker, the young Korda had a variety of jobs before he started working as a photographer's assistant. It was while on an assignment for Revolucion newspaper in 1960 that Korda took the famous photo of Guevara at a protest rally, after a Belgian freighter, carrying arms to Cuba, was blown up by counterrevolutionaries while being unloaded in Havana harbor, killing more than 100 dock workers. As he later recalled, Korda was panning his lens across the figures on the dais when Guevara's face jumped into the viewfinder. The look in Guevara's eyes startled Korda so much that he instinctively captured it. Korda spent 10 years as Fidel Castro's official photographer. During this time, he used his skills to humanize the revolutionary leader's image in off-duty scenes, shared moments with Ernest Hemingway and Jean-Paul Sartre, and confronted a caged tiger at the New York Zoo." ALBERTO KORDA (Havana, 1928- 2001). "Che Guevara", c.1960. Photograph, original negative. Signed and dedicated in the upper left part. Measurements: 30 x 21 cm. Korda, whose real name was Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, had his first contact with photography when he took his father's 35 mm Kodak and began taking pictures of his girlfriend. Korda began his career as a photographer, initially shooting banquets, baptisms and weddings. The quality of Korda's work as a beginner was very poor and his photos deteriorated quickly. In 1953, Korda opened his first studio with a photographer named Luis Pierce. Initially, Korda and Pierce did a variety of work ranging from fashion to advertising. However, by opening his first studio, Korda had the opportunity to learn from his mistakes and stop the process by using the right chemicals. Most of the work was photographed by his studio partner in order to keep his business going. It was the money generated from these jobs that allowed Korda to develop his unique style of looking at an image from another angle, different from traditional studio photographers. It was this style that defined and popularized the photographs made at Korda Studios. In the early years, Korda was more interested in fashion and became Cuba's leading fashion photographer. Korda disliked artificial lighting, saying it was "a parody of reality" and only used natural light in his studio. He was the master of black and white photography, with his work he sought the perfect composition and framing. Korda had a unique creative ambition that often surpassed in style compared to the unimaginative cultural perspective of traditional Cuban photography. This unique creativity turned Korda Studio into more than just a thriving business; it became an art studio.

Alberto Korda (Cuban, 1928-2001). "Guerrillero Heroico" gelatin silver print, 1960. Hand signed beneath image at lower right. A rare edition of "Guerrillero Heroico" printed by Alberto Korda himself from the original negative, and hand signed below the image. The unique size and remarkable clarity of this striking photograph sets it apart from other editions; note the strong contrast and shading, as well as the preservation creating an imposing presentation of the famed revolutionary. Alberto Korda (also known as Alberto Diaz Gutierrez or simply Korda) was a Cuban photographer best known for this iconic image of the Argentinian Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. Korda once said of this image, "There's something about his eyes in the photo. A kind of mystery. His personality comes through." Size of image: 14" W x 16.25" H (35.6 cm x 41.3 cm); : 24.5" W x 27.25" H (62.2 cm x 69.2 cm) While working on assignment for the newspaper "Revolucion" in 1960, Korda shot this famous photograph of Che Guevara at a protest rally after counterrevolutionaries blew up a Belgian freighter that was carrying arms to Cuba. Jonathan Green, director of the UCR/California Museum of Photography, has speculated that, "Korda's image has worked its way into languages around the world. It has become an alpha-numeric symbol, a hieroglyph, an instant symbol. It mysteriously reappears whenever there's a conflict. There isn’t anything else in history that serves in this way." A seminal photograph demonstrating Alberto Korda's aesthetic prowess and boldness. ALBERTO KORDA (1928–2001)

    Est: €2,000 - €2,400

ALBERTO KORDA (1928–2001) | Norka smoking at a roulette table, Havana c. 1954 Image Size: 28,5 x 27,3 cm English: Vintage silver print on semi-matte paper 31,5 x 27,3 cm, flush-mounted on original cardboard, in good condition (traces of use). Photographer's studio stamp "Esta prueba es propriedad de Studio Korda, favor no cortarlas devuelvase" with handwritten image number "959" and Spanish annotation "reducir a 8" le ancho" (reduce the width to 8 inch) on the reverse. This extremely rare original print by the famous Cuban photographer, who shot the world-renowned portrait of Che Guevara in 1960, dates from his earliest beginnings as a fashion photographer. It shows his favourite model Norka – whom he later married – smoking in a casino. Korda moved his studio in 1956 and has since used a different stamp than in the case of this lot, what allows to determine the date of printing.

Alberto Korda Silver Print - Guerrillero Heroico (1960)

    Est: $6,000 - $9,000

Alberto Korda (Cuban, 1928-2001). "Guerrillero Heroico" gelatin silver print, 1960. Edition 15 of 20. Hand signed and numbered "15/20" at lower right. Title "Guerrillero Heroico" and date "5/3/1960" handwritten at lower left. One of only twenty "Guerrillero Heroico" gelative silver prints of this large size created by Alberto Korda from his original negative as well as hand signed, dated, titled, and numbered below the image. His personality comes through." While working on assignment for the newspaper "Revolucion" in 1960, Korda shot this famous photograph of Che Guevara at a protest rally after counterrevolutionaries blew up a Belgian freighter that was carrying arms to Cuba. An iconic photograph - one of only 20 made from the original negative in this generous size - demonstrating Alberto Korda's aesthetic prowess and boldness. Exceptionally rare, and given that it is editioned, even rarer! Size (image): 21.75" L x 17.375" W (55.2 cm x 44.1 cm) Size (frame): 25" L x 21" W (63.5 cm x 53.3 cm) About the artist: "Alberto Diaz Gutierrez Korda (Cuban, September 19, 1928–May 25, 2001) is considered to be the man who made Ernesto 'Che' Guevara an icon. During this time, he used his skills to humanize the revolutionary leader's image in off-duty scenes, shared moments with Ernest Hemingway and Jean-Paul Sartre, and confronted a caged tiger at the New York Zoo." (Artnet) Alberto Korda's works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, among other elite art institutions. An inscription on the verso of the framing reads, "2d twice by Korda - on the reverse he writes that this is one of 20 prints he made from the original negative in this large (24 x 20) size - 1998". Alberto Korda's "Guerrillero Heroico" - from the same limited edition of 20 and of the same large size - hammered for $13,000 - Phillips de Pury & Company New York, 22 May 2012 - lot 44; $9000 - Christie's NY, 31 March 2015 - lot 292; and $11,339 - Christie's London, 17 May 2011 - lot 28.
