Original vintage travel advertising poster for Austria, featuring a striking Art Deco-era lithograph by the celebrated Austrian artist Hermann Kosel (1896-1983), presenting a vibrant and romantic vision of the Austrian Alps. The composition is a masterclass in graphic modernism, utilising bold, flat planes of colour and crisp, stylised lines to depict a traditional oompah band marching across a sun-drenched hilltop. The musicians, dressed in traditional folk costumes with feathered hats, carry a large bass drum and brass instruments, their movement echoed by two women in colourful dirndls observing from the lower right. In this poster from the 1930 International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition, we see an automobile racing neck and neck with a motorcyclist below. This streamlined, stylized Art Deco design portrays the automobile speeding along a top track, while the motorcyclist keeps pace on a lower track. Hermann Kosel (1896-1983) was an Austrian poster artist and painter. He studied graphic design with Julius Klinger at the master artist's private advertising school. He went on to work in conjunction with several other prominent designers including Max Frey and Erwin Gibson, and in 1929, he began his solo career. Each year from 1929 to 1932, Kosel designed the poster for the International Car and Motorcycle Exhibition. These posters display the "wide breadth of his artistic capabilities. The styles changed playfully between Art Deco, New Objectivity and Constructvisim, perfectly corresponding to and capturing prevailing artistic themes" (Denscher p. 158). Wiener Plakat 164. ARTIST: HERMANN KOSEL (1896-1985) SIZE: 23 3/4 x 36 3/4 in./60.4 x 93.2 cm PRINTER: Christoph Reisser's Sohn, Wien DESCRIPTION: The flattened perspective and isolated chill of Kosel’s winter revelry lends additional grandeur to the already resplendent Südbahn Hotel and its shimmering Semmering environs. This romantic pass, with its steep limestone cliffs, craggy rocks, broad ridges, and wide valleys gained significance through the centuries as a first-class place to spend the night, even though it remained a difficult destination to reach, due primarily to the gradients of the old pass road. However, the construction of the railroad created an explosive influx of tourism that changed the face of the region forever. The daring pioneer of all mountain railways, the Semmering Railway still enjoys the admiration of the world. With sixteen several-story viaducts, fifteen tunnels, 142 vertical structures, 129 bridges, artificial rock faces, and supporting walls, it was amazingly built over a construction period of only six years. In 1882, the luxurious Südbahnhotel was built, and though it saw some rough transitions during the World Wars, the hotel reopened with all the amenities of its former magnificence in 1948. Kosel also created a design for the summer pleasures of this hotel; see Voyages, p. 63. (Art Deco; Winter Sports; Ski; Travel)

Paul Gerin, [Vienna.] Condition B+ / B: repaired tears at edges and along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; tape on verso; creases and abrasions in margins and image. Paper. Kosel studied graphic design with Julius Klinger at the master artist's private advertising school. He went on to work in conjunction with several other prominent designers including Max Frey and Erwin Gibson, and in 1929, he began his solo career. Each year from 1929 to 1932, Kosel designed the poster for the International Car and Motorcycle Exhibition. These posters display the "wide breadth of his artistic capabilities. The styles changed playfully between Art Deco, New Objectivity and Constructvisim, perfectly corresponding to and capturing prevailing artistic themes" (Denscher p. 158). Wiener Plakat 164.
