Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement. He is famous as a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower) designs. A dramatic depiction featuring a blue barn swallow in flight above swirling ocean waves, the print enhanced with white pigment for the wave sprays. SIZE of the sheet 36.7 x 19 cm, SIZE incl. frame 48.5 x 32 cm Provenance: From the private collection of Robert O. Muller, and thence by descent. The back of the frame inscribed in pencil, ‘Ohara Koson (1878-1945), “Swallow over ocean waves”, Japanese woodblock print c. 1930s, From the collection of Robert O. Muller’. Robert O. Muller (1911-2003) was an American collector and dealer who built one of the most significant private collections of Japanese shin hanga woodblock prints in the twentieth century. His interest in Japanese prints began in the early 1930s in New York, where he first encountered shin hanga works, then largely unknown outside Japan. In 1940, during a trip to Japan with his wife Ingeborg Lee, he deepened his engagement with the medium, establishing personal relationships with major publishers such as Watanabe Shozaburo and meeting leading artists, acquiring prints directly from both publishers and artists during a period when the export market offered works at relatively low prices. Before the Pacific War, Muller acquired the Shima Art Company in New York and founded the Robert Lee Art Gallery, later navigating wartime and postwar challenges to continue dealing and collecting Japanese prints. After his death, his heirs donated approximately 4,000 prints and an extensive archive to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, ensuring public access to this landmark collection, while other parts of the estate entered the commercial market. Condition: Excellent condition.
