In the context of Pravoslav Kotík's work, France represented an indispensable impulse that determined the direction of his artistic career for a long time. He visited it for the first time in 1924 and returned to the country repeatedly throughout his life. It was his stays in France that provided Kotík with the necessary artistic experience. A key moment in his artistic genesis was his acceptance of Picasso's lessons and their unique application in his painting, which to a certain extent marked the end of his classicizing period, dating from 1920 to 1924. The watercolor on paper entitled Au Soleil from 1927 also belongs to this phase of his development. The French cityscape, together with its inhabitants and architecture, is depicted here in a concise formal and coloristic manner. The atmosphere and rhythm of the city and its inhabitants became the main theme of Kotík's paintings in the 1930s. During this period, his views changed, oscillating from sharply defined figures to a more diffuse, lyrical approach that emphasized atmosphere and emotional charge. In 1927, during the preparation of his inaugural major solo exhibition at the Rudolfinum, Pravoslav Kotík was still in his late thirties. By that time, he had accumulated nearly twenty years of artistic activity, thirteen years of experience as a secondary school teacher in Prague, Turnov, Nová Paka, and Mladá Boleslav, membership in the Mánes and Umělecká beseda societies as well as in the HoHoKoKo social group, and participation in twenty group exhibitions. To this record must also be added his repeated visits to France, which he had undertaken regularly since 1924. Kotík’s sojourns in Paris provided him with essential artistic experience that exerted a profound influence on his work. Upon his return, a significant transformation in his artistic production became evident. A pivotal moment in Kotík’s artistic development was his assimilation of Picasso’s lessons and their distinctive integration into his painterly practice, which to a considerable extent brought his classicizing period, dated 1920–1924, to a close. This phase of his oeuvre also includes the oil painting Balcony, whose expressive form—characterized by Cubist reduction of shapes and a Fauvist color palette—directly reflects his Parisian experience. Despite the evolution of his artistic language, the human figure remains the central focus of Kotík’s work, a recurring motif to which he consistently returned. From the expert opinion of Rea Michalová PhD: "The painting under consideration, "Bouquet in the Window", is an authentic, high-quality, exquisitely vitalistic and poetically felt work by Pravoslav Kotík, a great artistic personality of Czech modernism, whose work is unusually scattered - and yet the artist's work has an unmistakable, clearly recognizable handwriting. The painting under consideration, "Bouquet in the Window", was created at the very peak of the artist's creative powers - the second half of the 1920s represents a mature and richly realised period in Kotík's work, a time of great concentration, when "the quality curve (...) rose sharply" (M. Pánková). The painting "Bouquet in the Window" is also attractive to collectors because it represents a lesser-known line of Kotík's work, a line that was created in parallel with the artist's figurative work and which, in addition to landscapes, also included the more sporadic subject of still lifes. It is as if these motifs represented a necessary corrective to his tendency towards genre, a "narrative" focused on the multilayered story of man. The literally pastel tonality of colour suggests that we are here in the vicinity of contemporary poetism, which Kotík arrived at in his own way." Picnic on the Grass is a representative example of the author's highly collectible period, when the influence of cubism was reflected in the artist's work after his study trips to Paris. From the opinion of PhDr. Rea Michalová Ph.D.: "The assessed painting "By the water" is an indisputable authorship, visually extraordinarily attractive, superbly played out in form and color by Pravoslav Kotík, a prominent representative of Czech modernism, an artist who was not subject to theoretical dogmas and had the courage to experiment artistically. The center of gravity however, his work became primarily a figural theme, i.e. a person in a complex social structure, reflecting his multi-layered story. Kotík was an author fascinated by the expression of human gesture, events and color contrasts in the painting. As Ludmila Vachtová accurately described: "At the beginning of these paintings, in addition to all the advantages, which we know about in Kotík (colorful organization of space, sense of large composition, bravura of detail), was movement. However, the focus of his work was mainly figural themes, i.e. a person in a complex social structure, reflecting his multi-layered story. Kotík was an author fascinated by expression human gesture, action, and color contrasts in the image. The featured image " By the water" is Kotík's beautiful work, exquisitely connected in form and color, which was able to literally brilliantly shine through the gloom of the wartime era. Figures in the spirit of cubist shape reduction and fauvist color scale represent a typical form of expression of Pravoslav Kotík. Kotík studied at both the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the 1920s and joined the country’s major art associations – Mánes Union of Fine Artists and Umělecká Beseda. It was here where he met artists Karel Holan, Miloslav Holý and Karel Kotrba, who in 1924 co-founded Ho-Ho-Ko-Ko Social Group focused on realistic subjects and social themes. Many layers can be found in Kotík’s oeuvre, from Expressionism and Fauvism in his early work and Cubism and Neoclassicism in the Twenties to touches of Surrealism in the Fifties. His paintings unfurl stories of lovers in cafés, toiling villagers, and people coming to terms their existence in the face of modern civilization. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "P. Modern city life against the background of historical architecture - in contrast to the old and modern, as well as man and woman, this is exactly what Kotík is interested in, as well as many of his generational companions. The emotional moment processed in an ingenious acronym offers a view of the meeting of two close individuals. Many layers can be found in Kotík's work; from expressionism and fauvism in the early works, cubism and neoclassicism in the 1920s, to a touch of surrealism in the 1950s. In his paintings, he tells the stories of lovers in cafés, sophisticated peasants, or people clarifying their existence in the face of modern civilization.
